It’s been no time at all since the show creator J. Michael Straczynski (JMS) dropped the surprise news of an animated Babylon 5 movie. Wolf sendsNot just one of the best Sci-Fi series of all time, but I think it was also instrumental in recognizing that it is possible to reward an audience for wanting to really invest in a show by giving it a story arc that remains consistent across 5 seasons and 110 episodes.

All five seasons of Babylon 5 were scanned and remastered from the original camera negative in 4K, with a colour correction and the cleaning of dirt and scratches as well. The many CGI shots of the series have been digitally upscaled to HD, and short of a complete remaster, that’s probably the best we can hope for. After years of cropped, blurry episodes, it will be a thrill to bring this series home in HD.

It’s rumoured that the movie is receiving a premiere at the San Diego Comic Con in July. Then, it goes to streaming and home formats on August 14th, 2023. I hope they do offer BluRay copies. It would be nice to see them maybe film a tribute or two for those who have passed "beyond the rim" - Andreas Katsulas, Richard Biggs, Jerry Doyle, Jeff Conaway, Michael O'Hare, Stephen Furst, and now Mira Furlan. Meanwhile, while we’re talking Warner, the Warner Archive have set Helter Skelter: An American Myth for DVD release on 2/9, along with Six by Sondheim (2013) on Blu-ray on 2/9, and Harley Quinn: The Complete First and Second Seasons on Blu-ray on 2/16. The two-minute trailer gives us a taste of those other realities, as well as the return of the fan-favourite Zathras. We spotted the Icarus, the ill-fated ship which explored Z’ha’dum, the home planet of the Shadows, and Sheridan seemingly visits the darkest timeline where the allies lost the Shadow War. As well as giving us a further look at the animation style, this is another chance to hear Rebecca Riedy in the role of Delenn.
