About this deal

Live Streaming is only available when using standard YCC 422 video inputs, and when the record codec is set to either ProRes or DNx. If ProRes RAW or H.265 are selected as the record codec, streaming isn't available.

Load a frame grab or preexisting picture, then select from three levels of opacity or activate a split screen view to compare or match the still with the live image. There are a few reasons that the Atomos Ninja V has become such a must-have accessory amongst the film making community. Features are obvious, but it’s the build and handling that makes this both easy to use and useful in the film making process. Pair your Ninja V and get ready to access a powerful collection of new cloud-based video production services In this review, I’ll take a look at the Atomos Ninja V and what it has to offer. This review might seem a bit late as the Ninja V has been available for a few years. Most mirrorless cameras record internally using H.264 or H.265 compression. The Ninja V uses higher-quality codecs—your choice of DNxHD or ProRes, with various levels of compression available. With DNxHD, you have the ability to adjust the level of compression; with ProRes you can choose between the LT, HQ, and 422 formats. Ultimately the Atomos Ninja V enables you to shoot great video more easily and take some of the processing strain away from your computer. The Ninja V doesn’t handle LUT’s in the same way. When applied a LUT still shows how the image will be effected but it also effects the exposure tools including the waveforms, scopes and the false colour display. This means that by using a lut you can no longer trust the exposure tools on the Ninja V. Arguably one of the first and most important accessories for any video shooter has to be a decent monitor. Sure, the articulated or flip monitor on your camera may well do the job, but it still can’t match the function and features of a dedicated device such as the Atomos Ninja V. The ability to mount the Atomos Ninja V is a major feature and gives you plenty of flexibility in various shooting locations. I would recommend using a cage around your camera as this further extends the mount options, but also enables you to fix down the cables which are essential if you’re moving about.

If you shoot a mirrorless camera that has a clean HDMI output, there is often a huge improvement in the quality of the footage if you output to an external drive. Most cameras record 4:2:0 in 8-bit internally, but via HDMI can output 4:2:2 in 8 or 10-bit. That gives a lot more color information and is a huge benefit if you are shooting Log footage to maximize dynamic range. What exactly the Ninja V can do for you depends on which specific camera you use. If you have something like the Sony a7 III, you'll get 8-bit 4:2:2 4K at up to 30fps. If you have the Panasonic S1, the video quality jumps to 10-bit 4:2:2 at up to 60fps.Before we go into those, it’s worth noting that internally the A7 III stores video footage with XAVC-S compression, using H.264 in a common .mp4 container.
