Description

While most of what you need to know about playing Boarding Actions is to be found in the regular 40K ruleset, for which you can read our guide here, Mission Setup The various factions of the 41st Millennium are now forced to undertake Boarding Actions against these twisted space hulks, with small, elite forces clashing in their claustrophobic confines. Any Arks of Omen book – Play a variety of missions and find out how to set up games, including judging the Underdog and forming Boarding Squads The new mode also pares the list of available Stratagems right down to a handful of key options – initially allowing just for Command Re-roll , Counter-offensive , and Insane Bravery . Later books will introduce an arsenal of Stratagems for each faction – and even some sub-factions – starting in Arks of Omen: Angron .***

Now, this is an… interesting choice for a Boarding Patrol. It’s almost as if Games Workshop asked 40K players how many Rubric Marines they wanted, and all they heard was Yes. If you missed it, we look at the latest pricing and values of the new Warhammer 40k box sets, besides the Boarding Patrols, in separate posts below:

This is hard-hitting force includes three Crisis Battlesuits and a squad of 10 Fire Warriors, who are perfectly suited for close-quarters combat when assembled as a Breacher Team. The battlesuits have numerous short-ranged weapon options, which offer great utility against many different enemy types in tight spaces. The most important thing to say about getting started with Boarding Actions is that, unlike Kill Team, it’s not a particularly easy, beginner-friendly way of getting into the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The Eight are the elite war council of the Farsight Enclaves – including O’Shovah himself, of course. They may not be a deployable force on the battlefield at present, but we can certainly build a 2,000-point army around them. A mixture of elite Crisis, Broadside , and Riptide battlesuit teams is very on-brand for the Farsight Enclaves, after all. Dice and Tape Measure: Just like regular 40K, Boarding Actions uses 6-sided dice and a tape measure in inches to play the game.

So if you’re looking to start Custodes without any gaming context – be aware that 9 models will be make over 500 points, which we’ll discuss below in the points section. Boarding Patrol: Adeptus Custodes – Value Key changes have also been made to the Boarding Actions Mustering Rules , as the Battlefield Roles that previously determined which units you could recruit no longer exist. Instead, each faction now has a simple list that details exactly which units they can select from their free Index, and how many, together with any rules adaptations that apply.

Best Warhammer 40k Arks of Omen Boarding Patrols Value & Pricing: Updated

If you don’t have any Characters in your Boarding Patrol detachment, you can selsect one of your unit champions as your Warlord. You can also select any special army traits granted by your codex (with some exceptions we’ll get into in the next section), and you can select an Enhancement instead of the Warlord Traits and relics you would normally use (more on that below as well). Jokes aside, this Boarding Patrol is the one with the least models – 9 in total. If you’re new to Custodes, you may be thinking, ‘Really? Only 9 models?’. But veteran Custodes players will know this is not GW skimping – it’s that these units are expensive in game – as running Custodes lists generally are. That’s 265 points right there. I’d also want another unit of Legionaries to up the “boots on the ground” count personally. That’s another 180 points, too. We need to leave room for Wargear and with those additions we’re at 1820 points. Maybe another 20 cultists or if you’re feeling extra spicy, drop 10 cultists and add in 5 more Terminators. That will give you a bit of wiggle room for wargear (although not by much — we’re talking 50 points).

Custodes are an elite army, so the Custodian Guard are your infantry (at least what’s available in this box), and with only 5 of them, use them wisely – otherwise you may be overwhelmed very easy by horde armies. I once played a game as Death Guard against Custodes, and my opponent found himself overwhelmed by Poxwalkers, Deathshroud Terminators and Bloat Drones – but that’s the cost of fielding an elite army against a conventional one. The Custodian Guard can be built with one as a Shield Captain and one as a Vexilus Praetor – the guy with the flag. Both options offer more power to the unit, but are expensive upgrades at 105 points each so may not be worth it in a Boarding Actions list. Reconnaissance suggests that the other factions in the 41st Millennium are mustering their own Boarding Patrols. Sign up for the Warhammer newsletter to brace for impact. As they’ll be doing the lion’s share of the damage – against many different kinds of troops – our Crisis Battlesuits have a diverse selection of weapons at their disposal, from infantry-shredding burst cannons to elite-melting fusion blasters. We’ll also prize Early Warning Overrides for their bonuses to Overwatch – extremely potent in Boarding Action games. This Boarding Patrol box offers decent savings averaging 37% – except for the Aussies, who get a big boost in savings at 42%, which is a nice switcharoo considering previous Boarding Patrol boxes often offered lower savings for those in the Land Down Under. You are almost getting quite a chunk of the box for free, individual values considered. Boarding Patrol: Leagues of Votann – Contents If you missed it, we look at the latest pricing and values of the new Warhammer 40k box sets in separate posts below:Each team was given equipment to match one of the Eight, resulting in a diverse and flexible force. Like these legendary warriors themselves, this army can take on almost anything – and it’s a great candidate for elaborate conversion projects. In other cases, new rules have been adapted to suit the claustrophobic battlefield. Units can stand on top of objective markers, for instance, just as they did in the previous edition. Some of those corridors would get mighty cramped if they couldn’t! My personal conclusion on this Boarding Patrol list is that, it’s actually pretty solid. The Breachers are your rank and file soldiers who will spam the corridors and objectives, the Starstriders provide supporting fire and the Assassin causes havoc all over the board in the confusion. If you’re looking for an unconventional army you might not play in bigger scale 40k games, then this may be the one for you. These rules force squads to engage each other in dangerous situations, unable to take pot shots from the safety of another room. In fact, while many kinds of weapon can normally be fired beyond your line of sight, this is expressly forbidden in Boarding Actions.*
