Canby, Vincent (26 March 1977). "The Eagle Has Landed (1976)". The New York Times . Retrieved 25 September 2014. While US and UK VHS cassettes had the 123-minute US cut, most DVDs and Blu-rays available worldwide feature the original UK theatrical cut, which in DVD region 2 and 4 countries runs 130 minutes at 25fps ( PAL speed). There are two exceptions:

Firstly, by 1943, the German network in Tehran had been neutralized by arrests, well before the conference was to take place. Secondly, it has been estimated that 3,000 NKVD agents were guarding Tehran for the conference and they did not note any incidents or threats. Thirdly both Roosevelt and Churchill travelled on foot or open jeep throughout their four-day stay in Tehran (unlikely were there an assassination squad of Nazis wandering around). Fully deserving of its status as a classic covert operations thriller. A must read. The Eagle Has Landed: The Movie Confused IRA Professional: My second favorite character & God Blessed him with a great sense of humor. In fact all Irish men seem to have it...he seemed to have the most of it. In the whole book Devlin only once was genuinely sad otherwise it seemed to me that God gave him a little more of the "happy hormones" & none of the sad ones. He shows what the War did in terms of choices & cause & I have come to believe that "one man's soldier is another man's terrorist" is indeed true. Again Devlin lived till much later & met with the writer. Radl travels to Alderney and recruits Steiner and his surviving men. Steiner's father, General Steiner, is being tortured by the Gestapo for his alleged ties to the German Resistance. This serves as an additional incentive for the Colonel to accept the mission. Radl relocates Steiner and his men to an airfield on the north western coast of Holland, where they familiarise themselves with the British weapons and equipment they will be using. The team will be air-dropped into Norfolk from a captured C-47 Dakota with Allied markings. The commandos outfit themselves as Free Polish paratroopers, as few of them speak English; the plan is to infiltrate Studley Constable, capture Churchill, rendezvous with an E-boat at the nearby coast, and make their escape. As part of the ruse, they arm themselves with Sten guns, M1 Garands, Bren guns and revolvers, as well as Browning Hi-Powers, instead of German weaponry. In some ways a copy of the the original classic war novel and in other ways a bloody good yarn. Steiner & Devlin remain an interesting pair of antiheroes if there were ever any.

The Eagle Has Landed: Alternative Cover

On June 5, 1944, a group of Allied soldiers landed in Normandy, France to begin the liberation of Europe from Nazi control. Among them was an American paratrooper named John Steele. As the troops fought their way inland, Steele was captured by the Germans and sent to a prisoner of war camp in Poland. While in captivity, Steele worked on a secret plan to escape. In April 1945, he and a group of fellow prisoners made their break for freedom. They stole a German plane and flew it to safety in Allied territory. The escape was a remarkable feat, made all the more impressive by the fact that it was captured on film by the British documentary filmmaker Humphrey Jennings. Jennings had been following the troops since their landing in Normandy and had been filming the war effort for the Ministry of Information. The footage of Steele’s escape was included in Jennings’ documentary, The Eagle Has Landed, which was released in 1946. The film told the story of the Allied victory in Europe, from the perspective of the soldiers who fought in it. The Eagle Has Landed was a critical and commercial success, and its release was a major event in Britain. The film was nominated for an Academy Award, and its success helped Jennings’ career tremendously. Today, The Eagle Has Landed is considered a classic of wartime documentary filmmaking. Its impact is still felt today, both in the way we remember the Second World War and in the way we tell stories about it. a b Koemmlich, Herr (22 August 2009). "The Eagle Has Landed". Movie Censorship . Retrieved 31 March 2014. Radl then has to find an officer to lead the paratroopers, who will be disguised as a Polish unit. He needs someone who speaks fluent English. He finds Lieutenant Colonel Kurt Steiner, who grew up in London. Disgraced, Steiner has been working in a penal unit because of an incident that happened in Warsaw. Horrified by the treatment of Jews at a railway station, he turned on SS officers to allow a young girl to escape. As punishment, he and his men are relegated to carrying out highly risky suicide missions in the English Channel. Harvey Preston – A SS British Free Corps officer attached to Steiner's unit to add credibility. A convinced Nazi, and a convicted con-man prior to his enlistment, Preston is viewed with disgust by Steiner, Devlin, and their fellow commandos. After Steiner, Neumannn, and Devlin escape, Preston is lynched inside the village's Roman Catholic Church by a mentally-ill resident of Studley Constable.

In March 1976, The New York Times announced that David Bowie would play a German Nazi in the film if his schedule could be worked out. [8] Jean Marsh's role was originally offered to Deborah Kerr, who turned it down. [9] Filming [ edit ] The story takes place in the fictitious Norfolk village of Studley Constable. The plot follows a Abwehr headed special forces mission for abducting British Prime Minister Winston Churchill during his supposed visit to a remote village in Norfolk. The mission is assigned to a Fallschirmjäger commander, Lieutenant Colonel Kurt Steiner and a small group of paratroopers who are air dropped into Norfolk where an IRA operative Liam Devlin and Joanna Grey, a longtime Abwehr agent are waiting for helping them with the mission. What follows is a thrilling tale of immense action and delightful narration, which mixes fact and fiction nicely. Churchill is a Personified MacGuffin, as the entire story is about the attempt to kidnap him, but he has no direct role in the plot.

What Is The Village In The Eagle Has Landed?

Unfortunately, Canaris assigns the project to a very efficient staff member named Colonel Oberst Radl, who promptly discovers a way for such an intrepid plan to succeed. It all comes together when a deep cover agent in a small community in Norfolk reports that Winston Churchill is scheduled to visit their little hamlet for some much needed R&R to paint some of the idyllic countryside.
