No more waiting, no more promises, I'll have this book now, and the book is empty, then it's a bad book, and it will get a bad review. They stood there for a long, tense moment, perfectly still, with her dark eyes meeting his unblinkingly. Then his right hand darted up and closed around her left wrist, savagely tight. He could feel thin bones under thin skin, and he knew that one good sharp twist—- The whole setting of the book took place in a completely different place than its predecessor, this time taking place in the island city of Tal Verrar and the Sea of Brass. Although I miss the city of Camorr for its beauty and resemblance with Venice, I do think that Tal Verrar and Sea of Brass gave the necessary new atmosphere to the book and series as a whole. You wore your fighting boots and left your dress shoes by the wardrobe. And all of your weapons are missing.” Inside, then, as though nothing is amiss. If any of you give me any trouble, by the gods, I’ll start practicing throat surgery.”

Difficult. “Difficult” and “impossible” are cousins often mistaken for one another, with very little in common.’

I also felt that this book got incredibly preachy at points- which is kind of a killjoy for a novel that has two thieves for heroes. Lynch decided that he needed to push some kind of Robin Hood, working class agenda to make his heroes seem morally superior to everyone else. Nobody is reading this book for justice for the lower classes, Lynch. From Zodesti’s medical bag, Jean withdrew a bottle of wine. He pulled the cork (Jean had found the bottle in Zodesti’s study, half empty), splashed some on the physiker, poured the rest on the ground, and pressed the empty bottle into Zodesti’s right hand. From the smell that wafted up around them, Jean guessed he’d just wasted a very valuable kameleona. Despite giving a 3.5 stars rating, The Republic of Thieves is still a great book. The rating reflects my disappointment more than the quality of the book itself. Although this is my least favorite installment in the series so far, this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t read this book if you’re already a fan of the series. I personally think it’s amazing that Lynch was able to write three books with different settings, stories, and tones within the same series by using the same main characters. One last thing, there’s a high chance that the next book in the series, The Thorn of Emberlain, will be magnificent because The Republic of Thieves felt more or less like a setup for it to shine. The revelations that intersperse this book, the hints at larger plots and dangers beyond what a ‘simple’ fantasy/heist book requires are more proof – if you needed it – that Scott Lynch is working on something bigger than we had ever imagined. With a total of seven books planned for the series, it is obvious that what is to come is like nothing we could have guessed at.

Yeah. So, I got the job and I thought to myself... wasn’t there a big man looking for alchemists and dog--leeches just last week? What might they have to say about him? Oh? A bad poisoning? A man bleeding to death in bed at the Villa Suvela?” Cortessa spread his arms and smiled beatifically. “Some problems just solve themselves.” I can’t,” said Zodesti with a new firmness in his voice. “Think whatever you like, do whatever you like. He is beyond my powers of intervention. I daresay that puts him beyond anyone’s.” From the heart of the garden itself, closed off from view by a ten--foot stone wall, Jean could hear the sounds of a lively party. Clinking glasses, shrieks of laughter, and behind it all the hum of a nine--stringed viol and a few other instruments.Jean had faced many fast opponents in his life, but never one that dissolved instantly at his touch. That wasn’t human speed; it was sorcery.

Upon first sight, when she spoke her first word to him, he fell in love (though he didn't know this yet). I don’t want you running off to the first constable you can find as soon as I dump you on the street.” Lynch has some great lines and banter throughout this book and I was able to follow along with his story so much better this time around. It seemed like he had a clear idea where his story was going and I loved the journey that he took me on. Plus we are left with a very unexpected ending that made me want to continue on right then….but alas just a little longer until the next book is out. His real problem is self--inflicted. You see, we can deaden our minds to any suffering of the flesh. But that art requires caution. It’s extremely dangerous to use it in haste.”In 2010, I lost a marriage but gained a cat, a charming ball of ego and fuzz known as Muse (Musicus Maximus Butthead Rex I). No!” Jean yelled, ceasing his fight. Four men seized him and dragged him into the inner room, where he counted at least five more visible opponents. One of them grabbed a towel from the linens table and held it up to his bleeding nose. Somewhere out there,” said Jean, “must be an illness that makes its sufferers meek, mild, and agreeable. I’ll find it someday, and see that you get the worst possible case.”
