About this deal

Muddle the cucumber rind, valt vodka, elderflower cordial and lychee juice in a boston glass and shake well, strain into a chilled flute glass and top up with champagne. Whisky, gin, beer, and vodka. For its size Scotland is home to a surprising number of quality drinks producers. Which spirits category, we wonder, will Scottish distillers delve into next? Alex Nicol, Co-Founder of Edinburgh Gin, added: “The gin and spirits industry has seen significant growth which we have experienced for ourselves at Edinburgh Gin. We have been crafting the gin renaissance from our distillery in Scotland's capital since 2010, aiding people's modern-day discovery of gin. Already well know for their NB Gin, recently judged the world’s best London Dry gin, the couple have now produced what is thought to be the world's first London Dry citrus vodka. We are the world’s first 100 per cent Scottish single malt vodka and this listing is testament to Asda’s commitment to local producers, and in providing the very best products to consumers up and down the country.”

Holy Grass vodka launched in December 2015. Distilled in Elizabeth (the name of the still), the vodka is infused with the holy grass, also known as Bison grass. Additionally, Highland apples and apple juice are used to complement the vodka’s herbal character.Keeping alcoholic beverages in mind, Scottish craft beer and artisanal gin are two fast growing industries. Now Scottish vodka seems to be catching up as producers create bottlings with their unique twist on the spirit. I just wanted to make the best vodka in the world but we had to have a unique selling point. Nobody has done a single malt Scottish vodka. That’s what set us apart from the rest.” And though this is mainly down to sales from the big multinationals, small batch producers, like those in the gin industry, are now beginning to make their mark.

I just wanted to make the best vodka in the world,” he stated, explaining that a ‘peaty’ vodka with a smoky flavour is next on his hit list. What makes a vodka a single malt? Well, the Valt vodka is produced using only malted barley and Scottish mountain water. The idea came to fruition in a bar in Manhattan, when two Scotsmen decided they wanted to create a Scottish vodka like no other. Produced at the Strathleven Distillers located near Loch Lomond, they specialize in single malt gin and vodka production. With a focus on farm-to-bottle products, the distillery also released gin in addition to their vodkas. Eventually, the brand aims to release whisky in the years to come. But first expect a third vodka to drop in the spring of 2018. Valt is produced for a niche market, with only 20,000 bottles made annually – small fry compared to famous brand Smirnoff, which sells more than 25 million nine-litre cases every year. The vodka has been in production since 2006 and its unique recipe has been produced using a specially-designed bespoke copper still.

In January the company launched Gilt, a classic London dry gin flavoured with nine botanical plants, also for the ultra-premium market. Mr Christie said US distributors typically would require volume of about 50,000 cases, five times Valt's present output. To achieve this, we sought the unique skills of Scottish distillers and insisted on using only Scottish malted barley and mountain water. However, no suitable distillation method existed, so we had to invent an entirely new process. We developed a quintuple micro-distillation technique that was decidedly untraditional, just for us. By launching equally sophisticated spirits such as Tullibardine, Valt and Edinburgh Gin in Asda stores across Scotland, it will now mean that more consumers than ever before can enjoy a truly Scottish drinking experience.”

Mr Christie, a former Speyside distillery managing director, said: "When we sat down and looked at our business plan we were quite modest in our aspirations because the sector of ultra-premium vodkas – we weren't thinking about gins then – is a small one.
