About this deal

The sky’s the limit at the upper end of the scale but, for a top-of-the-range mower with the smartest sensors, the most sophisticated control apps and enough equipment to mow a large lawn, you can expect to pay thousands of pounds. Other features to look out for: One of the things that a lot of people ask me about robotic lawn mowers is whether they have enough power to complete the entire lawn in one go.

Not all the lawns are flat. If you have slopes in the yard or garden, then don’t think that the mower will not be able to cut the grasses. Its powerful motor and high-quality wheels easily push the mower over paths that are inclined up to 25 per cent. I tested the LawnMaster VBRM16 on my front lawn and was really pleased with the results and how well this machine worked. It was simple and easy to use, has a great run time and is overall a well made and impressive piece of garden equipment. The blades on any lawn mower have the potential to cause a serious injury so I was pleased to see that the LawnMaster VBRM16 comes with a lift and tilt sensor. The LawnMaster VBRM16 cuts in a random pattern. When you turn it on, it’ll start mowing in a forwards direction and will then move around the lawn. When it reaches a boundary or an obstacle, the LawnMaster VBRM16 will turn to cut in another direction.

Spares Parts and Accessories:

Object avoidance: A feature that all robot vacuums have but rarely seen on robot mowers, certainly at the lower end of the price spectrum. A good safety feature for those with pets or kids who play in the garden unsupervised. The mower can move over an inclined path up to 8.5 degrees. To be honest, it’s not a great angle to cover because several other models can cover anything between 20 to 35 degrees. If you own a flat lawn, then there is no need to consider the inclined movement. However, if the garden has some high slopes then you should look at other options present on this list. Some of this comes from the comparatively sparse box. Where most robots are supplied with charging stations, pegs and rolls of boundary wire, the VBRM16’s accessories are minimal. There is a charger for the battery but it’s a standalone device about the size of a tub of margarine, which can be stored anywhere and plugged in as needed. The removable battery is also in the box and needs charging before the mower’s first use. The LawnMaster L10 is unusual among robot lawnmowers in that it doesn’t give you much control. As with most robot mowers around this price, it follows a random pattern around your lawn, using the principle that if it keeps mowing it will cover the entire lawn eventually.

SOLID & RELIABLE - The LawnMaster L10 robotic lawn mower is from a brand you can trust. The L10 is tough, durable, IPX5 rated to be fully waterproof and comes with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty. I’ve worked with some hefty robot mowers before so I was looking forward to working with a more compact and lightweight - or at least easier to lift - model, and that is exactly what I got with the LawnMaster L10.

The Worx Landroid M500 Plus WR165E reduces this problem. The spinning disc that the cutting blades are attached to is offset from the centre, closer to the side of the mower, which lets it cut closer to edges. It doesn’t eliminate the problem completely, but if you lay your boundary wires carefully, you can minimise the extra work that’s left behind. I allowed the lawn in my front garden to grow to around 60mm, despite having given it the first cut of the season the week before testing the LawnMaster VBRM16. For this, I used the 40mm cutting height but there are five options to choose from between 20mm and 60mm which I thought was more than adequate.Like most robot mowers the L10 uses three small blades to cut the grass and they did a decent job. But – there’s always a but isn't there – the mower uses a random pattern which we found confusing. And, if we didn’t leave running long enough it missed small patches of grass. The first time we left it running for 30 mins to get the lawn in a decent state. For consecutive cuts we dropped the cutting height to 20 mm and ran for about 15-20 mins. In terms on on-board tech, this model is truly well endowed. Aside from its ability to cut narrow passages and handle slopes with inclines of up to 40 per cent, it also features electric cutting height adjustment (from 20-50mm), a TargetHeight function which lowers the cutting height automatically if necessary, and a weather timer which monitors the lawn’s growth rate so that the mower doesn’t make too many unnecessary cuts. It has LED headlights, too, presumably so the owner can look out from his man-study and watch its silhouette trundle across his modest sward while sipping on a G&T.
