About this deal

Food Isn’t Medicine wades through nutritional science (both good and bad) to demystify the common diet myths that many of us believe without questioning. In it, we learn about how a difference of opinion on whether food is medicine lead to Justin Bieber telling the author to f*ck off on social media. The evidence that Dr Wolrich provides for his conclusions is unarguable and he has done a superb job of presenting it very strongly and clearly so it's understandable for a wide range of readers. I was unaware of his instagram presence before reading this book, so I came to this with no preconceptions. This includes but is not limited to, Vegan diets, all carnivore diets, Keto diets, Coconut oil, dairy, foods to 'cure' Cancer, juicing and more besides.

Het is ook leuk om nog eens bevestigd te zien dat "op dieet gaan om liefst zo snel mogelijk af te vallen" iets zinloos is, gelijk welk (populair) dieet hiervoor gevolgd wordt. Although that concept has largely fallen by the wayside, the food-is-medicine philosophy brings us back to the disease-as-punishment mindset. In the end it turns out that diet was not the solution but pain management and having infusions every 2 months was.

My weight and my health was simply because I have never been able to crack the code of eating perfectly for my own body's needs. If you ignore all the stuff that contradicts what we’re trying to say, you’re just cherry-picking the data. Along the way, it does give some really excellent pointers about healthy eating (healthy both for your mind and for your body) and I'm already implementing some of those. I’ve followed Dr Joshua Wolrich on social media for some time – so when I saw he had a book coming out I was keen to read it. Not because I didn’t like the book – I really did – but I was nervous about what people would say and think.

If I had my way, it would be the only book out there for sale, to stop others following faddy, and sometimes dangerous, diet trends and/or continuing to hold inaccurate beliefs about nutrition and weight. Pseudoscience and quackery love the food-is-medicine philosophy because it helps them sell their nutritional supplements, diet books, and therapy sessions. He follows a Health at Every Size® approach and you can find him using social media to campaign for healthcare to become weight-inclusive. Hippocrates’s maxim is likely a misquotation — one that many people have a vested interest in continuing to promote. I'm not saying that the "perfect" diet for someone, whatever that is, can alone cure or prevent any disease and particularly not any form of mental illness, nor am I claiming against all kinds of therapeutic drugs in all cases.

Reintroducing complex carbs properly into my diet has helped no end with my piles issues (never knowingly undershared! We eat FOOD we don’t eat individual nutrients – and food is definitely more than it’s constituent parts. But I’m also the happiest, and with definitely the healthiest eating habits, that have developed naturally the more I was letting go off all this nonsense.

A great addition to the canon of fat-positive books, his writing style is accessible and the information pitched at a level the most can understand (which is so important for books like this, which are conveying complex medical terminology). He is also very passionate about nutrition and how it has been hijacked for spurious means and fights against this throughout the book.I had always put off most things in my life "until I lose weight" and that was back when I didn’t even have any weight to lose (but my gymnastics coach said I was getting too chunky, when I was 10 and looked 8, instead of the preferred 6 year old look). I have multiple chronic health issues which complicate my relationship with my body already, I absolutely do not need to add moralising its size, shape, or weight to the list thankyouverymuch. After looking into to ways to help my health via the food I eat over the years and subsequently getting lost in the weight of dubious information, it is good to get something that is clearly written and science based to shed some light on the topic. This book explores various diets and food information that is floating around on the internet and looks at the science behind them, the veracity of the claims and the health implications.
