No Mixcloud this week, as the episode is so heavy on Hawkins that it would violate Mixcloud’s terms and conditions.

I love that SO many of the covers stay true to the song’s roots with blues or jazz takes, but there are a few standouts or different sounds. The record sounds great overall, but I have to agree with the others noting popping and cracking (loud enough to be distracting as there are a lot of quiter parts to the album). Jones (2) Boots Randolph (1) Boz Burrell (1) Brenda Lee (1) Brian Auger (2) Brian Bennett (3) Brian Epstein (6) Brian Jones (6) Brian Wilson (10) Brill Building (14) British rock (18) Bruce Botnick (3) Bruce Johnston (8) Bruce Springsteen (2) Brunswick Records (4) Bryan Maclean (4) Buchanan and Goodman (3) Buck Owens (2) Buck Ram (3) Buddy Holly (9) Buffalo Springfield (4) Bumps Blackwell (7) Burt Bacharach (3) Buzz Cason (2) C. But while people like Sutch had admired him, Hawkins was mostly a legend in British blues circles, someone about whom almost nothing was known. By this time, he’d found a regular team of people to work with — Leroy Kirkland was the arranger, and Mickey Baker would play guitar, Sam “the Man” Taylor and Al Sears were on saxophone, and Panama Francis was on drums.Thomas from Buffalo, NyOn the NBC-TV drama Profiler, serial killer Jack dedicated this song to the object of his obsession, Dr. Grimes first met Hawkins backstage at the Moondog Coronation Ball — a legendary gig put on by Alan Freed in 1952, which was the first big sign to Freed of just how successful rock and roll was going to become. Coming from a multicultural background, Atlas’ musical influences included Maghrebain, hip-hop, reggae and so on. PS If Paul in Perth (or anyone else for that matter) would like a copy of the chords, the band I play in has just started gigging our own version of the song (in Cminor), so just let me know. Lennox’s cover of the song was featured in the 2015 film Fifty Shades of Grey and her sultry vocals fit in there perfectly.

Also, "I Put a Spell on You" was used at the end of a The Simpsons episode in which Krusty the Clown make a new sandwhich for his fastfood chain which is both addictive and psychedelic. So Grimes didn’t get to play that day, but Jalacey Hawkins, as he was still then known, managed to get himself backstage and meet Grimes. Hawkins eventually agreed, though he kept a finger between the coffin and the lid, so it couldn’t close completely on him.And just in case you don’t want to sit through nearly two hours’ worth of the same song, don’t worry – I already did it for you. Hawkins says that the original version sounded “cannibalistic, like a man-eating somebody,” he described, which led to the song being banned. Paramount Pictures decided that they didn’t particularly want to have their film picketed, and so removed Hawkins’ section from the film. I only noticed while doing the final edit for this episode that I used the words “legitimate” and “illegitimate” to describe children, and that this usage could quite possibly be considered offensive, something I hadn’t realised when writing or recording it.

Jay Leno and Fran Drescher also appear in early movie roles, and Tim McIntire is superb as Alan Freed. As I mention in the episode, I leaned very heavily on one book here, I Put a Spell on You: The Bizarre Life of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins by Steve Bergsman. Grimes gave him a job as a combination road manager and musician — Hawkins would play piano and saxophone, sing occasionally, and was also (according to Hawkins) Grimes’ valet and dog walker. The tour wasn’t a commercial success, but it built Hawkins’ reputation in Britain to the point that it seemed like *every* beat group wanted to record “I Put a Spell on You”.He states that the "minor progressions are great" and ends on the notion that it "deserves to do well" due to its "big sound" reminiscent of James Brown. Jesse Cook—This one has some very cool guitar work at the top that hints at a flamenco guitar sound, and Jesse’s voice is so smooth and lovely. According to Hawkins, Ruth Brown came to see the show at one point, and said of him “This is the only bitch who can sing my song better than me”. What we do know is that he seems to have grown up extremely resentful of women, particularly his mother.

That doesn’t mean he wasn’t a bad boy or a substance abuser, but I do think you put your thumb on the scale with this one. And I think that means I should give Sookie the final word here, in a quote from the end of Steve Bergsman’s biography.Barry from Sauquoit, NyOn February 12th 1956, Screamin' Jay Hawkins recorded "I Put a Spell On You*"; later in the year it was released on the Okeh Record label. He brooded over this for a day, and then had another conversation with the barmaid, and told her he was planning to go to Philadelphia to get the girl back. When he’d got back to Cleveland, he’d heard Freed on the radio and been amazed that they let a black man have his own show, so he’d gone down to the radio station to meet him, and been even more amazed to find out that the man who sounded black, and was playing black music, was in fact white. Inspired by his dear friend, "Seasons in the Sun" paid for Terry's boat, which led him away from music and into a battle with Canadian paper mills. Due to the more family-friendly nature of the show, the line "there's hell to pay" is changed to "there's heck to pay".
