The situations she found herself in, and the massive part that she played in education, loving and shaping the young princesses throughout childhood and in to adulthood. How sad it was to read how the loyal governess was ultimately ostracised by the entire Royal family. Warm, witty and wise, New Beginnings is a behind-the-scenes look at the ups and downs in the life of a daytime TV presenter. This is my first book by this author and it won't be my last, her writing kept me drawn in and she had formed her characters well. This story has its host of characters, including Crawfie’s husband who is a drunkard and liar, the other Royals, staff and other characters. It’s a fascinating story that is revealed and makes me want to look into Marion’s life more as I am sure many readers will after reading this rivetting book.

There may be some factual parts to this story that somehow entwines into a fictional piece of work that makes this story interesting and worth the read. The settings also move from Cornwall to Spain, London and India – and back again – with each area beautifully described (adds the Taj Mahal to the ‘to visit’ list! Fern has interpreted and revitalised actual events based on Marion's own book, The Little Princesses. Fern Britton worked with a touring theatre company and in 1979, she started her career with Westward Television in Plymouth. It wasn’t set in Cornwall this time but, cantered around the Royal family and in particular the Princesses governess Marion Crawford. I for one, would like to think that Marion was influenced by her husband, the world he existed in was so far removed from Marion’s, there was a sense of jealously.

A hugely popular household name through iconic shows such as This Morning, Fern is also a much sough-after presenter. The Good Servant is in fact Marion Crawford, the governess to the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret in the 1930s onwards. She is duped by unscrupulous American magazine publishers into relating stories of the princesses' childhood. I loved the imagined conversations between Crawfie and nursery staff stalwarts Alah and Bobo and the way in which their relationship morphed into ones of mutual respect and fondness over the years. Of course today, the Royal Family’s private lives are far more well documented but in the 1950’s it was quite different and as the first servant to cash in on the private lives of the royals, Crawfie was ostracised by the royal family and they never spoke to her again. I've read a bit about the Royal Family recently due to the Jubilee and this book makes you wonder whether things could have happened the way this book suggests.

Ed and Charlotte have been married for fifteen years, but they have been drifting apart and now Ed suspects that Charlotte may be involved with another man. There she finds her home again and discovers a new life, and new love … But she also opens a treasure trove of secrets.

I knew George was going to be no good for Crawfie when a certain incident happened , it was only a minor detail but it set me thinking about him. Marion Crawford, an ordinary but determined young woman, is given a chance to work at the big house as governess to two children, Lilibet and Margaret Rose. Sunday Times bestselling author comes the story of Marion Crawford, governess to the Queen – an ordinary woman living in an extraordinary time in 1932.
