About this deal

Her family left Scarborough in 1958 and moved to Coventry where her father worked in car and aircraft factories. But the depiction of Brookie and his bouncer father, subsisting on food banks – okay, fair enough – and things that he and his father and brothers can steal from skips, did strike me as… problematic. You must contact us at once if your circumstances change, or you could have to repay an overpayment, a fine or face prosecution. Meanwhile, Simon’s sister Cat Deerbon now married to Chief Constable Kieron Bright has her own issues with patients and personal family worries especially with her son Sam who is in medical training. In A Change of Circumstance, a young local man is found dead of a presumed overdose in a flat above the Chinese pharmacy in neighbouring hippy village Starley.

If you do not inform the relevant benefits office you could be paid too much benefit and have to pay it back, and this could count as fraud which is a criminal offence. The family dog, Wookie catches the atmosphere of excitement and leaps up, throwing himself at Hannah and begins to "lick her joyfully. There is something about these Serrailler novels that is infinitely pleasant: they are comfortable reads, reassuring in some way. Just as the story was coming to a head, things came to an abrupt end with a toe-curling Mills and Boon flourish.

I did feel that this book was a bit more episodic than others in the series, with shorter chapters and quicker changes of scene or character. Susan Hill's writing is superb, her plotting excellent and she creates characters who stay in your mind long after you've finished the book.

If you have been receiving Income Support, Income-based Job Seekers Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, Employment and Support Allowance (Income Related) or Severe Disablement Allowance for 26 weeks or more before starting work you may be entitled to an Extended Payment of Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Support. Cat and her family always add a good personal touch and she offers Simon the stability and family he needs. Having recently listened to a number of Inspector Dalgliesh stories, the similarities are notable: they’re both beautifully (if wordily) written and both rather smug - yet they’re languorous and well-plotted with great narrators. Susan Hill either reached her word count or got bored of the grubby county lines plot and decided not to tie up the loose ends. The whole thing is, of course, extremely well written in that way Susan Hill has of crafting elegant, readable prose which never draws attention to itself but carries the reader along beautifully.

But when the dead body of a young man is found in filthy surroundings, a hypodermic syringe hanging from his bruised and wasted arm, Simon decides that it is time to tackle the issue head on.Unfortunately, as a Chief Superintendent Simon Serrailler becomes far too involved in the basic workings of the cases. The story, too, is a timely one and in many ways well done; the stories of the children involved and of the effects on their families are vivid and gripping, for example. D. James, this newest case is sure to enthrall new fans and surprise old ones in what is a captivating new addition to a highly acclaimed series. In conclusion, whilst raising a real and challenging social issue, as a narrative, this was a pleasant, unchallenging and comfortable read.
