About this deal

The stories were easy to read but the sex scenes seemed forced to me and I found them unnecessary at some point. The last page in the book felt like the author was patronizing ‘Nearly All the Men in Lagos Are Mad’. The humor in the novel cannot be missed, in ‘That Weekend in August’, the author helps us to relive the 6 am warm water and salt bath broadcast that went around after the Ebola virus outbreak. This to me is madness, that this man seems to get the victim position when they both are secretive and toxic to each other.

Kuku's writing style is delightfully irreverent, and he fearlessly tackles taboo subjects with a touch of satire.

Even her in-laws who know that the marriage only exists because Amos raped her, still accuse her to be a witch who wants to kill her own son. Beautiful to note is the simplicity of the language in the book, which makes it an easy read for anyone. Noting that the cause of infertility in the marriage is a result of the woman’s irresponsible lifestyle in her youth, the author then reveals that the man has tried his best not to cheat on her when he already brought in an official third party into the marriage. An example is when Kenny’s mother in ‘Swiped Right’ speaks ill of Bella for being on Tinder but thinks that it is men being men when Kenny brings it up that his cousin must have been on Tinder to have met her there.

When it comes to relationships, you are lucky if you get a happy beginning and a not-so-terrible ending. Nearly All the Men in Lagos are Mad is a short story collection written by Nigerian author and actress Damilare Kuku. Some were really enjoyable such as Catfish (messy as hell), Ode-Pus Complex (madness) and Cuck-Up (also mad). Short stories are always a good start to get off a reading slump or ease you out of the state that heavy books leave you in.

She masterfully skewers societal norms and exposes the ridiculousness lurking beneath the surface of everyday life. Nearly All the Men in Lagos Are Mad is a collection of twelve short stories featuring characters with unique voices and stories that represent the diverse class, gender and ethnic melting pot that is Lagos. Although set in various parts of Lagos, the part about it being 'men' isn't quite true as the book shows.

This is collection of short stories, some of which were funny, some were not so funny, and a couple of sad ones in between. The polygamous inclinations of African men are deeply explored in this book, as is their propensity to find logic in double-standards.My favourites were International relations, A Lovers Vendetta, Side Lined, Independence Day and Beard Gang - something about its crudeness, factuality and engagement was hooking.

What may be underreported in other reviews of this book, is the tendency of the fairer species to make terrible decisions where matters of the heart are concerned. As usual with short stories, I’m often left dissatisfied as I feel some stories could be explored more but I understood the stories for what they were and tried to enjoy them as such. This book underscores with wit, humour, wisdom, and sensitivity the perils of trying to find lasting love and companionship in Africa’s craziest city that will prove universal and illuminating. So grab a copy, sit back, and prepare for a riotous journey through the madcap world of Lagosian men. I also found it amusing how you can pretty much replace Lagos with Lilongwe and the message remains the same.
