A young man named Theo is a low level member of the gang; he is convinced by one of his best friends, “Easy”, to elevate himself into the higher ranks so that he can score a larger share of the profits of the group. And that's fine, because this is a far more rewarding and subtle book than all the blaring about 'Shocking Twists! It's a story that could have been lifted directly from the newspaper headlines – gun crime in London, gang violence and bystanders caught up in what happens.

There is a real deft subtlety to her performance that belies the stereotype of a bereaved and damaged woman.

All in all, the promise of a twisty plot was highly oversold, and the characters often seemed like they were following a plot instead of reacting sensibly, making the book heavily unsatisfactory. The victim's partner, a police officer on maternity leave as she's 8 months pregnant, is also keen to find out more, especially as it appears that her partner was keeping secrets from her. The four hour-long episodes will see Ripper Street and Twilight star MyAnna Buring, 37, take on the role of Detective Inspector Helen Weeks with Shameless actor Ben Batt playing her partner and fellow Detective Inspector Paul Hopwood. While an investigation into a murdered teenager might not exactly be cause for celebration – on the surface of things – Weeks should be happy.
