I could really imagine myself walking along the beach and the oftentimes wild and barren outcrops above, with the wind whistling and a dog at my heals, very, very British. Congratulations to Clare Mackintosh on an impressive, addictive debut, and thank you to The Berkley Publishing Group for introducing me to a new thriller favorite.

One of the reviews on the book’s inside cover states that I LET YOU GO “[w]ill actually make you gasp out loud. I LET YOU GO follows a mother hiding out in a secluded cottage, attempting to heal from her son's untimely loss, and the two detectives tasked with finding the boy's killer.He had happily been skipping along anticipating milk; biscuit; twenty minutes of television, fish fingers for tea…. Reading a little about the author and her background in the police force for many years, this story germinated from an actual real life hit and run accident of a nine year old boy.

I raise the mug to my face again, but the tea has cooled and the warmth on my skin isn’t enough to hurt. It was a nice slow burn and there were subtle things happening to develop the story and the characters. I won't bother with a plot summary because I would need to either reveal spoilers or deliberately mislead you. His coping mechanism relied on focusing on the investigation—on the hard evidence before them—and not dwelling too deeply on the emotions of the people involved. Perhaps it has also set on her paranoia; perhaps she has turned resolutely away from the imagined writing in the sand, with newfound resolve to put her past behind her.I look at them, then I hurl them with all my strength toward the wall, where they shatter into tiny pieces that shower down onto my desk.
