About this deal

I really like this set because it’s not too expensive, the pets are more 3D, and there is such a wide variety of animals. Oh So Design is a member of ACID (Anti Copying in Design) and designs are supported by ACID through their Design Databank. Host of the popular podcast, Beginning Teacher Talk, and creator of the innovative literacy program for 1st and 2nd grade, Dogs Help Kids Read and Succeed, Dr. Setting clear expectations for desk pets is an important step in making them a successful part of your classroom. Once students get started adopting a desk pet and collecting the building materials, they often go home and tell their parents all about it.

You’ll just need to adjust the ways that they will earn rewards and modify your expectations to include these little learners. For your middle mathematicians, try using desk pets to guide students on skip counting by multiples and multiplication tables in their hundreds charts or hooray arrays! This will also help you to notice what your students are really into and what the most popular items are, so that you don't I purchase sets of erasers that aren't very popular with your students. They purchased rugs and blankets (fabric squares) and pillows (little pom pom) and food (also erasers). Because this is just one part of my classroom management system, students who aren’t into desk pest are not required to participate. My simple solution is to put a bin labeled “Pet Daycare” by the door where students drop their Desk Pets (in their individual labeled containers) on the way out. Once your students adopt their pets, they get to keep them at their desk — hence the name – and what comes next is up to you. But because I use desk pets as part of my classroom economy, those students who weren’t into desk pets could choose to spend their money on other things they enjoyed.

The accessories (see picture below) were small erasers that I had organized into four categories- Fruits and Veggies, Sweets and Treats, Holiday Accessories, and Pet Accessories. Depending on the guidelines that you set up, you may only need one desk pet per student and this set would be the perfect amount. Consider using punch cards to let your students earn accessories and food items for their desk pets.

Explore our favorite spelling activities that can be used for a variety of grade levels, with ideas for fun games from our teacher team! Now that your students are fully engaged in the pet talk, say something like, “You know what would be nice is if we could each have our pets with us in class to keep us company while we learn. I wanted to promote positive behavior and a good learning attitude, and I wanted to motivate my kids to finish their work on time. Just have a shelf or a large flat area where each student can have a space to build a habitat for their pet. Who needs an office plant when you can have a little robot to liven up your space and guard your desk instead?

If students didn't follow those agreements or broke our other Classroom Agreements, their Desk Pet would have to sit in the Day Care Center for a day. Energize Labs suggests that there's even more fun to be had if you get Eilik a friend, as these desk robots can interact with one another through friendship or the occasional fight, which I'd love to see.AI which looks like a teeny little hooded robot, wearing headphones, and sitting on a skateboard (which can also be used to charge your phone). The desk pet movement was created by elementary school music teacher and viral TikToker Marissa Begay, who began posting about them in late 2020 as a prize bin alternative, only to see her video (and idea) go viral. Instead of focusing on individual rewards such as desk pets, I would encourage you to have your students work towards a class goal to help build a sense of community and teamwork.
