Plenty of diagrams, cross sectional diagrams and references to the diagrams so you know what you're looking at and also that you know what you're reading if it is describing a difficult-to-explain-without-diagrams part/component or process.Otherwise mechanics can take advantage of you - if you don't know what a spark plug is, and does, you can be taken to the cleaners by a shady mechanic! I have used other study books that I didn't really understand but the Hillier's book helped me so much that I probably wouldn't have passed Motor vehicles level 1 at college. I own several incomplete editions of this famous 'Hilliers Fundamental of Motor Vehicle Technology' book series, spanning at least a couple decades, maybe longer. I bought the Haynes Manual for my MX5 with the real intention of carrying out work but could not penetrate it's language.I may supplement my collection with chassis/bodywork technology because I own an elderly Mercedes and it needs periodic maintenance. Not only does it give you the fundamental basics but it also takes you to the maths and science behind everything.
