About this deal

The gruesome unchewed contents of fossilized mosasaur guts reveal a varied diet of sea birds, ammonites, smaller marine lizards, pterosaurs, turtles, sharks (potentially), dinosaurs carcasses that drifted offshore, and even other mosasaurs. Snakes and monitor lizards also replace their teeth continually, but the ways in which the replacement teeth form are very different. These sea beasts inhabited almost the entirety of what is now the Atlantic Ocean, regardless of the current climate zone. Please note: You will receive a tooth of equal or greater quality to the one pictured and will be a minimum of 20mm long. These reptiles underwent significant changes over time, adapting to various niches within the marine environment.

Now multiply that by about 60 total tooth positions in their mouth (not including that second tooth row on the pterygoid bones) and you have…a lot of teeth! Please be aware that, as our products are 100% authentic and organic, they are subject to variation. Countershading is a camouflage method in which the top half of the animal is a darker color than the underside. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. An artists reconstruction of the Mosasaurus beaugei whose fossils are found in the Late Cretaceous phosphate deposits of Morocco. It is for this reason that many paleontologists emphasize that they were scourges of shallow seas - signifying the reptiles' need for easy air availability. The mosasaur who owned the fossilized skeleton pictured above, lived during the Cretaceous Period and grew to be 20 to 30 feet long. Larger mosasaurs were the great leviathans of their time, extending 10–15 meters, or 33–49 feet long.

While this evidence alone suggests the Mosasaurs were formidable predators, a spectacular new find in Jordan has revealed that Mosasaurs were "countershaded" with darker pigmentation on the top and lighter on the bottom. We are proud to be one of the UKs best natural design interior design studios and sourcing genuine specimens is one of our top priorities. A large, fossil ammonite from Alberta preserved in brilliant ammolite showing circular teeth marks of a bite from a Mosasaur. Scientists and dentists alike have no problem recognizing the crown tissues enamel and dentine in mosasaur teeth. Description Mosasaur Tooth Fossil Conical tooth belonging to a very large prehistoric marine reptile.

This logic is evident in members of the Plioplatecarpinae subfamily of mosasaurs, like Platecarpus tympaniticus found in modern day Kansas. I just happened to get more blemishes and got the smallest size for large, with a broken tip as well. The study of mosasaur teeth started as a potential tool to decipher the evolutionary relationships of these giant marine lizards, but it has since expanded beyond this question. They also posited that this creature was proof of an extinct species and, perhaps, the victim of a major catastrophic event.

Marine animals lacking gills need to surface for oxygen and it is this need that mosasaurs preyed upon. Every piece in our Palaeontology, Archaeology and Meteorite collection has been professionally authenticated, and each comes with an official Curated Studios certificate of authenticity. Feasting on a diverse diet, mosasaurs were apex predators, preying on fish, smaller marine reptiles, and even ammonites and other marine creatures.Mosasaurs were equipped with robust jaws capable of swinging back and forth and had strong muscles capable of powerful bites using dozens of large teeth designed for cutting prey. Through a combination of camouflage and thrust power, large mosasaurs lurked near the surface and would lunge out to snatch surfacing marine animals or flying animals hunting on the surface.

This Mosasaurus Tooth in Matrix has been hand set by our expert entomologists in our studio and elegantly mounted in a museum quality deep box frame. This second upper set of conical teeth goes a long way when capturing quick prey with a lightning-like strike.

The bronchi leading to the lungs run parallel to each other instead of splitting apart from one another as is observed in monitor lizards and other terrestrial reptiles. I will probably link back to this post in future entries, just to remind readers (and myself) just how important mosasaurs have been to the larger, tooth-related questions we now pursue. If we look first to the sea, the Mesozoic Era might not be known as the Age of Dinosaurs, but rather as the Age of Marine Reptiles.
