The Dutch garden hoe has a long handle, usually made of wood or metal, and a rectangular blade that is attached to the handle at a right angle. Stirrup hoe: Used in a back-and-forth motion, the stirrup (or loop) hoe is a good choice if you have more stubborn or persistent weeds.

The sharp carbon-steel blade is narrow enough for small gaps between plants and has a clean cutting action. Our testers found the stainless steel blade sliced weeds smoothly and was easily controllable, but it could occasionally slip. I don’t always make exciting big animals like some other artists (lots of wildlife artists paint lions, tigers and eagles) for me I find an ant or a lizard as interesting as a giraffe. Garden Hoes are traditional hand tools which have been used for many years in a variety of ways, including shaping and clearing soil, removing weeds, and harvesting root crops. The exhibition shows the very best of art inspired by the natural world and includes paintings, drawings, sculptures and artist’s original prints. It feels like we are having to substitute a robust handle for something that will help take the hits for our bodies, or visa versa. I have chosen yourself as, I too, love wildlife and my Grandad has a farm and has sheds full of old tools and I love making things.
