About this deal

John-channeling “Blue Moon Rising” and Ben’s guileless “Rosalita,” but out of context (and this record is hard as hell to contextualize) they seem a bit like pastiche, easy to criticize retreads from the first record.

He has many favourite bands and artists including Manic Street Preachers, The Fall, Blur, David Bowie, Mansun and Oasis. The second half of the record falls away quality wise and it sounds a wee bit like they are treading water towards the end but "we haven't turned around" is just magnificent and one of their best ever songs and highlights what fine musicians they are.Indeed, it’s an album that takes repeated hearings to fully appreciate, and even then, the elusive nature found in this occasionally awkward set of songs kept any familiarity factor slightly out of reach.

His voice – along with the samplers, the hand percussion, the exotic stringed instruments – made Gomez records sound different. CMJ New Music Report ranked the album at number 13 on their list of the Top 30 Editorial Picks of 1999.There was no pause between Bring It On and Liquid Skin – the records were released just 518 days apart. Those gigs were some of the best that we have ever done and we’ve done probably, upwards of a thousand now together. NME Piers Martin also found it to be "very much like" their debut, "only bigger, even more confident and with far better production".

Gomez continue on from their reformation with the announcement of the release of an upgraded 20th anniversary version of their second album Liquid Skin. Tom Sinclair of Entertainment Weekly noted that the band had been referred to as roots rock, "but one listen to their sophomore CD shows they’re twisting those roots into strange and marvelous shapes". Tracks like “Someday,” which sounds very much of that late ‘90s time, and skronky percussive track “Nobody’s Girl.Liquid Skin received generally favourable reviews from critics, many of whom found it to be a retread of Bring It On with improved production. Now, 20 years after its release, the band is preparing to release a celebratory anniversary edition of the album, complete with previously unheard material, including the nearly forgotten song, “Someday”. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
