About this deal

I still have no idea how 10a is parsed - I can see the definition but have no idea how it's derived from "top spy"! The erne is commonly seen flying in the corners of American crosswords where the setter has backed himself in, so all I needed was the definition on that one.

That took a lot of brain power, very few clues were straightforward for me, but ultimately made finishing even more enjoyable. MacNutt – who was a stickler for fairness and precision in his clues – must be turning in his grave.

The answer to this is DECAMETRE (defined by `11 yards’) and clearly intended to be a soundalike (homophone) for DECK A METER (Adorn a device for measuring…). Spine lightly rubbed at ends and edges, small black mark to front (possibly ink); pages lightly tanned, binding sound.

It should make finding your question easier for others and, the easier it is to find, the more likely someone is to answer it!This small piece of kit is designed to make building your Quiz, Crossword or Puzzle question more effective. That’s not enough to merit a prize but at least gets me on the scoreboard for this year’s competition.

I couldn’t work out the link to 2D for ERNE – it had to be that from the crossers and definition…so thanks for the explanation(s) above. Although Joseph has always been a popular name, it's never had the the same degree of ubiqitty in the English-speaking world as John or William.Tls three-quarters through - now completely stuck viz A strange way to be alone in Anthony's 2014 first novel A? After seeing your description of this puzzle, I went and did it and also went back to try some previous Everymans. Where I take issue with Everyman is in his use of question marks: he doesn’t always use them when he should, and he sometimes uses them pointlessly. I was thinking recently that it’s been a while since I posted anything about crosswords, and today I got a nice surprise that gives me an excuse for a short post.

A trickier than usual Everyman but not so much so that it would cause too many problems, as there are lots of anagrams and primary letters etc. If you think your favourite Quiz, Crossword or Puzzle should be listed here don’t hesitate to contact us.The puzzle was fairly tricky to solve but, as always with the Azed Competition entrants also have to compose a clue of their own. I stopped for a while when I was at Sussex, as I switched to the Independent whose prize crossword yielded a steady stream of dictionaries. Because of the time of year, there is a bit of a fireworks theme and 4dn and 9dn don’t rhyme, as in the past, but are related in their subject matter.
