About this deal

Ethyl Ascorbic Acid or EAC for short is an "etherified derivative of ascorbic acid" that consists of vitamin C and an ethyl group bound to the third carbon position. Whilst some people will argue that Ascorbic Acid is the be-all and end-all, I personally think it depends on your skin goals and with multiple derivatives, you're increasing the likelihood of getting some great results. While everyone around me was busy scanning the ingredients list to figure out what made it smell so good, Glow Recipe cofounder Sarah Lee discreetly tapped me on the shoulder. The only issue that I have is that I personally do not care for the scent and I do have some small clumps or gelling up of the product. It can be used to improve skin moisturization, as a solvent, to boost preservative efficacy or to influence the sensory properties of the end formula.

If you don’t enjoy the smell of pineapple, or if you simply don’t like fragrance in your skincare products in general, this odor isn’t overpowering at all, and does go away once the serum has absorbed into your skin, so it’s temporary. Dispense a couple drops into your palm and pat into your skin until absorbed — it won't take long, your skin will drink this sweet treatment right up.

Worse yet is the way my skin feels after using it; the serum is so thin that it does not provide adequate moisture; again unlike the serum in the Sample. The problem, though, is that it's very unstable, turns brown and becomes ineffective in no time (after a few month) and the cosmetics industry is trying to come up with smart derivatives that are stable and have the magic properties of pure Vitamin C. There's a Vitamin E derivative in here to help with stability, then lactic acid, which is an acid exfoliant.

Plus, it’s an antioxidant that protects your skin from free radicals, which can cause accelerated aging. During the day, make sure to follow with sunscreen as vitamin C and AHAs can increase light sensitivity. It’s a nice ingredient that just feels good on the skin, is super well tolerated by every skin type and easy to formulate with. The duo worked with their lab to create a blend of pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid), a more stable vitamin C derivative (3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid), and natural vitamin C derived from pure pineapple juice. As part of our business model we do work with affiliates; if you directly purchase something from a link on this article, we may earn a small amount of commission.

A: Since it’s such a powerful serum, all you need is two drops, applied after cleansing and toning, and you’re good to go. There are also plenty of other antioxidants in the mix, which help to stabilise the Vitamin C but also can boost its effectiveness.

Glow Recipe Pineapple-C Bright Serum did not deliver on any skin-brightening results, or any positive changes to my complexion as a whole, unfortunately.

However, this does contain a blend of more-stable, less-irritating derivatives that can still give some antioxidant benefits (protecting the skin from free radicals in your environment) and help with uneven skin tone. These are used alongside tranexamic acid, which is relatively new to the world of cosmetic topicals but has been used for many years as a treatment for blood loss. If you're going to pick up anything else, make it the lip balms, especially the zingy grapefruit version. EAC seems to have both an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect, and it's claimed to be able to boost the skin's collagen production. While the pineapple's effective punch of vitamin C and antioxidants works to protect and strengthen your skin's response to environmental stressors (no more red, angry spots), the fruit's high levels of natural AHAs and bromelain enzymes gently resurface your skin.
