I love being in a situation with a book where I’m wondering how the heck the people I’m rooting for — Saul, Natalie and Gentry — are going to possibly fight back, much less win in any recognizable sense of the word. Both gentlemen showered attention on her and while Charles never failed to show the primacy of his affection for me, it was understood by all that Nina Hawkins was one of those young women who invariably becomes the center of male gallantry and attention in any gathering.

Nina's Feedings had always run to Park Avenue suicides and matrimonial disagreements ending in shots fired from expensive, small calibered ladies' guns. I grabbed at the 20th anniversary edition of Carrion Comfort and immediately, of course, noticed the Stephen King blurb on the cover, “Carrion Comfort is one of the three greatest horror novels of the twentieth century. And as the primary actors of the narrative, they both have a deep sense of depth and urgency to them, which is part of what just keeps you reading and turning the pages, as it were. It is a pet peeve but I hate gambling parts in Bond movies, and in this novel the Chess showdown put me to sleep. Willi takes over the "use and hunt" aspect of the "game" and suggests taking the game global—which he and the televangelist support, and Barent and Kepler don't.

That leads Natalie to being our primary heroine of the story — which one has to reflect on how remarkable it is, even though it was the 1980s, that one of two main leads in a horror novel by a male author was not just a woman, but a black woman at that — as she seeks revenge and justice for her father’s inexplicable slaying. If novels are defined by their opening chapters, then the one for The Carrion Throne is a superlative work that keeps you spell-bound all the way through. Through this we also learn much of the history of the Imperium from ten thousand years ago, the Heresy and the Crusade itself.But in the course of it, various innocent bystanders, such as Natalie Preston’s photographer father, are killed. Our happy dominance of the youthful social scene was so pronounced that Cousins Celia and Loraine wheedled their parents into leaving two weeks early for their annual August sojourns in Maine. Borden in five weeks, perhaps three weeks if he was flown out to Hollywood to get the proper creative stimulation.

Simmons has something like 27-ish other books, maybe more since he wrote his introduction I imagine, and now, I’m ready to get into his mind some more. Perhaps in the intensity of that first, subconscious Feeding I literally lost consciousness as I was engulfed in the waves of fear, excitement, pride…of maleness…that was emanating from our two beaus as they faced death on that lovely morning. Which leads to the question, where the hell is the part of him that wrote this book hiding day to day?
