Adventure and danger do, it's true, come to the town in the end and Viv plays her part in defeating it, but I was pleased to see that Viv's success was due as much or more to the friendships she's made as to her fighting prowess (in contrast to the episode at the start where she fails just because she tries to do it all herself). the levels of happiness and comfort and warmth both of these things have given me this year is truly unmatched and both are just something so rare and beautiful that it truly feels like finding the best treasure in all storytelling.

Some bittersweetness is inevitable, but Baldree reminds us that the past - even our mistakes - is the fertile soil where we plant the seeds of a beautiful future -- C. I could have done without the necromancer bits but they don't detract from the "cozy" narrative that is at the heart of the novel. The thought of hobbling her way around a little of the town was a lot more attractive than it had been a few minutes ago.The innocent joy of Viv and Fern’s love is delightful and Baldree’s formula of placing low-stakes stories in high-fantasy settings remains good fun. I never thought I would be into cozy fantasy but the first book pleasantly surprised me so I was very excited for the prequel. I don't think it was bad, simply dully mediocre, and I guess I set my standards too high for Baldree's writing after his first smash hit.

Due to injury, Viv finds herself on a forced break from action in the sleepy coastal village of Murk whilst she recuperates.Overall it was a great enrichment to the saga as a whole, even if it didn’t land quite the same way. Drumming her fingers on the counter, she tried to distract herself by studying the interior further, but there really wasn’t much else worth marking. Rather its mainstay is nautical charts and popular fiction (Baldree gives us little glimpses of this).

A great prequel, I would jump back into this world Travis Baldree has created without hesitation any time. Through meeting the right people at the right time, or maybe the right people at the wrong time, Viv will eventually realize there is more to life than just fighting and killing.But she quickly gets to exploring this town, and meeting all the locals and their businesses, and soon enough viv finds many different kinds of adventures that will keep her busy while she waits for rackam to come back for her. It does the impossible: showing us a character twenty years before her story, and making us hold our breath to see what happens next.
