About this deal

While many scholars build careers through increasingly elaborate reconstructions of the ancient world, Beard consistently stresses the limits of our knowledge, the precariousness of our constructs and the ambiguity or contradiction inherent in many of our sources. The biggest impact that it had on me was to dismiss forever the 'frozen in time' tag that Pompeii carries - the idea that a sudden and unexpected cataclysmic event preserved the everyday activities of a Roman town undisturbed for centuries. Beware that the Ercolano bus stop is much less frequently used (and therefore can be skipped without notice) especially in the off season. This education would not be welcomed in a wife, and this fact coupled with her growing love for Tag makes her determined to escape the marriage chosen for her. Bettany Hughes' Venus and Aphrodite includes a wonderfully atmospheric chapter on Pompeii as the city of the goddess of Love.

This captivating picture book allows readers to follow the footsteps of Tranio and his friend Livia as they come to terms with the destruction of their city and find their own routes to freedom. Then turn right and walk along the tree-lined main street until you reach the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance. Mary Beard's expertise shines through, as well as her common-sense dismissal of some of the more fanciful interpretations of archaeological evidence.

While exploring Vesuvius on his own, Attilius discovers Exomnius's corpse in a pit of earth choked by noxious fumes, which also kills Corax, who has come to assassinate Attilius. The world's most controversial classicist debunks our movie-style myths about the Roman town with meticulous scholarship and propulsive energy .

We ask experts to recommend the five best books in their subject and explain their selection in an interview. The Traffic Systems of Pompeii is the first sustained examination of the development of road infrastructure in Pompeii-from the archaic age to the eruption of Mt. In a newly commissioned preface, author Ferdinand Mount praises this account of a ’city of gags and graffiti’. Since our earliest beginnings, every documented society has gathered to perform elaborate rites and ceremonies - from mass worship to body modification - yet ritual poses a deep paradox: why do we give the utmost importance to otherwise pointless activities? The novel uses its characters to contrast the decadent culture of 1st-century Rome with both older cultures and coming trends. Indeed, Pliny acts as the counterpoint to Attilius, who overthrows philosophy for the love of Corelia. However, it is constantly monitored so that the millions of residents who live nearby could be warned in the event of an eruption. It is, in many ways, a love letter to the place that somewhat unexpectedly became the focus her life.
