To be sure, there are many applications of linear algebra and it is a very useful subject, as are many aspects of math and science and related subjects. The breadth of applications is especially impressive: although most of them use extremely simplified models of the thing being studied, they really do give you a good understanding of how linear algebra is used in practice. Throughout the book, the theory is motivated and reinforced by genuine applications, allowing pure mathematicians to teach applied mathematics. However, what this textbook suffers from is a tendency to oversimplify the explanations and examples, especially in the more advanced topics like Principle Component Analysis. This leads into a chapter on eigenvalues and eigenvectors that shows applications to differential equations and spotted owls (5).

The author then concludes the main section of the book with a chapter on orthogonality and the least squares method (6) that provides plenty of applications and then a closing chapter on symmetric matrices and quadratic forms that deals with constraint optimization and other applications (7). com you agree to their terms and conditions, privacy notice and acknowledge they may use cookies and pixels for information and analytics gathering. On today's installment of "Rating my college textbooks because if I have to read them, they better count toward my Goodreads challenge! The set of journals have been ranked according to their SJR and divided into four equal groups, four quartiles. These exercises start from easy computations, such as computing determinants of matrices, to practical applications on simulated and empirical data sets with R so that students learn how to get started with R, along with computational examples in each section, and then students learn how to apply what they've learned to problems in applied sciences.

The content of the book focuses more on the conceptual than the computational side of linear algebra. This is a no-frills textbook for a one-semester course in linear algebra that focuses very heavily on algorithms and applications. David Lay is a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Canadian Mathematical Society, the International Linear Algebra Society, the Mathematical Association of America, Sigma Xi, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. It reminded me that knowledge of a subject's relevance and a desire to convey the importance of subject matter is not sufficient to make something exciting to read. He has made many contributions to mathematics education, including publishing seven mathematics textbooks and one monograph. Linear algebra is relatively easy for students during the early stages of the course, when the material is presented in a familiar, concrete setting.

Professor Lay has received four university awards for teaching excellence, including, in 1996, the title of Distinguished Scholar-Teacher of the University of Maryland. He is a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematics Association of America, and the Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences. I didn’t find the explanations particularly easy to follow (compared to a book that doesn’t necessarily want to be completely rigorous everywhere), so the only appeal that might have for some is that it lists a fair amount of applications.

The only justification given is that it allows us to determine when a matrix is invertible, but we already learned how to do that by row reduction in the first chapter. The latest edition provides new and revised content, with a range of features, including: A broad range of introductory vignettes, application examples, and online resources New material and topics to consolidate and enhance your understanding of the subject New, modernised applications to prepare your learning of the most innovative topics, such as machine learning, Artificial Intelligence, and digital signal processing With an array of exercises and questions to support your learning, this textbook provides the tools you need to build on your understanding of linear algebra and succeed in your studies. With traditional linear algebra texts, the course is relatively easy for students during the early stages as material is presented in a familiar, concrete setting.

Lay is also co-author of several mathematics texts, including Introduction to Functional Analysis, with Angus E. As is usual in mathematics, we learn to work out something with paper and pencil the hard way and then we figure out how to do it faster by writing a computer program. Although I have not read cover to cover, this book contains good pictures(positive definite, negative definite, etc.He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Amsterdam, the Free University in Amsterdam, and the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany.
