When managing the club, you will use 80 Resource markers and over 70 tokens – Strength, Weakness, Injury and Suspension , as well as 28 Stadium Infrastructure tokens . In writing, the rulebook dedicates five of its 30 pages to tell players how to successfully score matches. As such, I’ve played this at regular game nights, at weekend cons, and on lonely rainy nights at home by myself; and I’ve truly enjoyed it in all settings.

Combine all of this with the various tactic and formation cards on offer, and matchday feels more like an event, not an anti-climax at the end of the week. There are veteran players, who add to the team’s strength while they’re not quite ready to be put out to pasture. The game finished a very successful Kickstarter campaign last year, and there are already a number of expansions that are available – made due to the response of the KS campaign. Yes, it boasts a poor rulebook, another common characteristic attributed to the publisher, but it manages to come through on the self-professed identity in a way that I haven’t seen since Robinson Crusoe.

The table is setup to start the game – markets for advertisers, staff members, and regular players are made – 5 cards from each respective deck – it is helpful to separate the rightmost three cards (available now) from the two on the left (coming soon). Additionally, the difficulty level of the game is chosen, and each player gets six opponents; one to play each week.But where in previous years, that fleeting feeling of longing would quickly subside/be waylaid by day-to-day life, this time, something lingered.

You keep up to 1 red, blue and green disc between weeks, though you’re allowed to keep all your money. Each week runs pretty smoothly, and by the 2nd or 3rd week of your first game, you should have that sequence down pat. Within each third of the field, you can choose which shirts are in the center, and you are allowed to place up to one shirt in each wing (outside) area.Then all of this flows back into the league standings and your overall team picture, functioning as a decisive episode in the overall season narrative. The question for me is, would I choose Eleven over Trickerion when considering how to spend four hours? When the final whistle blows, the game is over – that’s when the real powers that determine the success of a football club come into play. I get that – yet I cannot help but feel that this game not only has a tacked-on multiplayer mode, but one that actively pushes solo to the back.
