Cheaper brands, such as those you would find in high street bargain stores, will have been mass-produced with lower grade materials which allow the low price tag. Though that may sound good for your bank account, you will soon discover you have a tape measure that slices your fingers, screwdrivers that don’t fit in the cross slot of a screw and a hammer grip that is slipping from the handle. Finding a trustworthy brand can be a big undertaking, and when you are faced with lots of recommended companies, the search can feel daunting. Some manufactures cater to different areas of the workforce, and not all brands offer all the tools in every field. First, you need to ask yourself if the brand you have chosen can provide you with the tools you need now, and the ones you will need in the future. Of course, you could buy from multiple brands, but that will require more research that takes up valuable time.

Wood preserver is basically an undercoat. You brush or spray it onto raw, freshly sawn or sanded wood surfaces to stabilise the wood’s moisture content and protect it from rot and decay. Whatever colour or non-colour you go for, at least you won’t have to put up with the fluorescent yellowy green colour of creosote, which used to be the only wood preserver you could get. Thankfully creosote – noxious, toxic and highly flammable – is no longer sold to the general public. Are wood preservers all solvent-based? I’m worried about fumes indoors. Like paint, wood preservers come in solvent-based and water-based varieties. Each type has advantages and disadvantages. However, in some cases, water-based wood preservatives are not designed to be used as a final coat of protection. They seal the bare wood and get it ready for paint or stain. So, if you do want to use a water-based preservative as your final coat, ensure you buy one that states it can be used for this application. Otherwise, you’ll want to treat the wood afterwards with paint or exterior wood oil. Having tools with excellent durability is extremely important. Not only will it mean you will not have to spend out on replacement tools when they break prematurely, but because tougher tools will do a better job. Sometimes cheaper ones can appear to work great until wear and damage suddenly make them unusable, and you are left unable to complete your task. This will lead to an extended work period as you will have to go out and buy a replacement. If you use that tool as part of your profession, it could mean the difference between hitting your deadline or not. No matter what kind of job you have or how you’re using the equipment, make sure your tools can stand up to the task in the first place.

Our range includes industry favourites such as Shed and Fence Mateand Triple Action Wood Treatment, as well as specialist Woodworm Killer and products that act as an antifungal wood treatment. Finally, the Sika Sikagard is suitable for both internal and external use, making it versatile for various projects like roof timbers, window frames, and door frames. Just remember to test it on a small area first to ensure compatibility with the type of wood being treated. Overall, this wood preserver is a fantastic choice for safeguarding your timber without the typical overpowering smell. You may have to pay more than the cheaper or disposable options on the market, but you will be thankful if a near miss or accident occurs and it was your PPE that reduced or avoided the injury. A 1L can of this wood protection is enough to cover 5m2 with two coats, and two coats are plenty. While Cuprinol state that this wood protector is to be used as a based coat prior to painting, many users have noted that they have simply applied this as a final finish and that there has been no blue stain or grey staining at all. When applying the product to joinery or floorboards, use 1 litre of Sikagard Wood Preserver per 3 – 4m² of surface. You’ll need to apply between 2 – 3 coats of the solution, with at least 2 hours of drying time being each application. The clear, colourless preserver allowed the natural beauty of the wood to shine through. It was also ideal for preparing the surface before painting, staining or varnishing, giving me the confidence that my wooden furniture would stay well-protected for years to come. Do not use electric tools in wet conditions unless they are approved for that use. If you must work in wet conditions, always ensure you have good balance and are unlikely to slip.

I recently used this wood preserver on my garden shed, and the results have been impressive. The low-odour oil/spirit formula allowed me to work comfortably without any overwhelming smell. The application process was smooth and straightforward, and the wood absorbed the preserver well, giving it a beautiful semi-transparent finish. Varnish, by contrast, is a topcoat. It won’t protect the wood on its own. Same goes for paint, wax and wood oil. So, if you want your woodwork to last, start with a few coats of wood preserver, wait until they’re fully dry, then go ahead with the varnish or other decorative topcoat of your choice. Can I use wood preserver on its own, without a topcoat? Moving indoors, our wood varnish products enhance the natural qualities of wood flooring, kitchen counters and furniture while protecting against scratches and heat damage. This water-based product from Sika is a fast-drying and deep-penetrating wood preserver that offers an exceptional layer of protection while ensuring the natural colour of the wood goes unchanged. We use this product in sash windows refurbishment projects to provide long-lasting protection of frames that previously were exposed to rot. You can apply for this protection prior to using good quality wood paint or simply leave the wood natural and beautiful, as a couple of coats of this preservative will ensure the wood is protected for years to come. Make sure you maintain your tools by performing regular maintenance tasks like grinding or sharpening. Remember to follow the manufacturer’s instructions while you’re doing this. Wear clothing that fits well. Loose clothing or accessories can get caught in a tool’s moving parts, which could result in dire consequences. Not only is preservative treated wood economical for the environment, it is also economical for your construction budget – instead of spending a lot on substitute materials like aluminium, concrete and steel, which cost more due to manufacturing requirements, import fees and environmental protection costs, you’d be saving a great deal by investing in Sika’s wood preservatives.
