Description

Gender equality is a major issue around the globe and whether it's at the BBC or within Arboriculture there is much progress to be made. In terms of representation and participation arboriculture is heavily weighted towards men, with only 13% female Arboricultural Association members according the 2016 membership survey. She won the ISA ITCC in 2008, in 2010 and again in 2014. This year, Jo came an impressive close 2nd in the ITCC. This closely followed her win in this summer's Women's Masters at the UK Open Tree Climbing Competition in July. Of course I need to mention Alex Shigo as his work underpinned so much of my early education in arboriculture. You know, I don’t know how one can walk by a tree and not be happy at the sight of it?” writes Fyodor Dostoyevsky in The Idiot. Perhaps this sentence might explain the subject of women in trees that was so popular between the 1920s and ‘50s and has until now never before been assembled in a book. The enthusiastic collector Jochen Raiss discovered this motif during his flea market excursions. These photographs feature young women at dizzying heights who, at times, smile into the camera as if they were in love. The publication assembles the finds from this charming genre that Raiss compiled over a period of 25 years. Whether the women are cheerfully dangling their legs, casually nestling in the branch forks or athletically climbing to the treetop, each picture has its own story to tell. Ans: The poet did not mention the departure of the forest from her house because it is a part of human nature to ignore the important matters of their life. We all know that trees are so important for our survival on earth. But still human beings are cutting them for making profits without even thinking of the aftermath.

More recently, tree conservation is justified through ecosystem services. These services, however, are translated into a universal language through their monetisation; the maintenance and protection of the tree are justified only to the extent that they allow a direct or indirect "gain" for the human community. In an industry in which the technical knowledge necessary for the good management of trees is now available, it is now necessary to take an ethical step: to give dignity to the trees and to ensure compliance with and respect for them, regardless of their relationship with humans. How do we provide support networks for young females who are unsure about entering a male-dominated profession or progressing within it? It began with a single photograph Raiss found while rummaging through the bin of hodgepodge vintage ephemera at a Frankfurt flea market — a woman, in a tree, happy and carefree.

Georgi Ennis

Some claimed she had been a German spy while others wrote books and Simon Holt wrote an opera about her. The verdict of an inquest into the death was "murder by person or persons unknown" but police investigations ended up at a dead end. The Forestry Commission has a number of routes into exciting, innovative and important forestry roles for women to help support its plans to expand, protect and improve our forests, woods and trees. Applications are open to join the forestry Degree-level Apprenticeship Programme in 2023 – a first-of-its-kind initiative to foster a growing, highly skilled and diverse workforce within the forestry sector. We have also launched the Forestry Training Fund, making free government-funded short courses available for people considering a change of career or those who are seeking to build and diversify their skills in forestry, teaching skills like chainsaw maintenance, coppicing, woodland management, and marketing and selling timber. Bo: Embracing myself and not giving up, along with a lot of coffee! I also use Herbalife nutrition products which have given me a lot more energy. Bo: Still doing what I am doing now, still climbing and assessing and training, helping out at competitions and still competing.

Bo also hosts a female climb and camp weekend, launched in 2016. It was such a great success, plans are afoot already for next year's meet. Jo's international endeavours are sponsored by DMM International Ltd and she is an ambassador for Husqvarna. Women in Arboriculture Group Chair Mandy Maynard said: “It is such a pleasure to finally be able to shout about this event at Kew Gardens after a 3-year delay! This event is now bigger and fuller so truly worth the wait. It’s amazing how much support we’ve received from like-minded people and companies who just want to celebrate inclusivity. See you all soon!”Lisa: What are some of the challenges you have faced in establishing your well-earned success as both a practitioner and a competition climber?

Alternatively, how many female arborists have heard 'Surely you’re not going to be lifting/climbing/cutting that?!' Sometimes harassment and discrimination at work come from clientele and the wider community. Simply by association, it may alter their perceptions. I’m not saying we need to recruit more women regardless of abilities or suitability to particular roles. This is what commitment to tree climbing looks like and this is what Bo had to say about her climbing career. She represents the UK chapter at the European Tree Climbing Championships (ETCCs) and competes for them internationally, including a winning trip to Poland in 2014 and another this year in July in Prague.
