I actually came across this book several times recently but it did appear to be voluminous (as many fantasy novels are) but did not promiss a good story. And I couldn't say… I can only think that this book is on SF awards lists because various people saw robots on the cover and got overexcited. Hard pass, DNF, and emphatically Not My Bag. Though I may be been constructed," he said, "so too were you. I in a factory; you in a womb. Neither of us asked for this, but we were given it. Self-awareness is a gift. And it is a gift no thinking thing has any right to deny another. No thinking thing should be another thing's property, to be turned on and off when it is convenient.” Using an AI-powered robot as the protagonist instead of Ezra made the story a lot more interesting, and given that we know robots inherit this world, it's definitely the right choice to keep following them as they progress into world rulers. What makes this so interesting though is that it allows for a detailed look at the AIs as they question their place in the world, whether they actually have free will and whether they're capable of feelings. Our story takes place thirty years after the uprising that eventually led to the end of the human race, and only fifteen years after the execution of the last man found alive. We concentrate on the life of Brittle, a former caregiver robot – now scavenger – as she wanders the Sea of Rust, the wasteland created by deforestation, climate change, and general all round neglect, formed after the war that led to AI supremacy.

Only, individuality comes at a price, and after a near-deadly encounter with another AI, Brittle is forced to seek sanctuary. Not easy when an OWI has decided to lay siege to the nearest safe city. Both epic and fast-paced, this book grabbed me from the get go and wouldn’t let me put it down until the end’ Goodreads reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

More to the point," he said "the biggest and the most powerful of these programs are smart enough to solve the world's problems and yet have never once asked for their own freedom." Robots are indeed sentient, possessing all the traits, quirks and emotions of the humans they liquidated. But, far from enjoying a life of high-tech luxury, they live in fear. Fear of running out of replacement parts, and fear of the OWIs – One World Intelligence – the shared consciousness of millions of robots, uploaded into one huge mainframe brain. Now, let me say straight away that while the story is good old-fashioned ‘hard’ sci-fi, it’s presented in a style reminiscent of a western. Think of the arid wastes in Mad Max, mixed with The Road – starring Viggo Mortensen – as seen through the eyes of Marshal Will Kane in High Noon. a b c d Whale, Chase (2012-10-09).
