Add to that the unverifiable status of online accusations: a Google doc gives protective anonymity, of course, to women speaking out, but it's also open to abuse as there is no evidence.

Everyone has an opinion and the social media pile on by total strangers forces you to pick a side and disregard the complexity of the issue. The novel follows what happens after this event, to their relationship, careers and also some of the other men on the list, and women who’ve suffered sexual violence. Most of all, I found the two protagonists so painfully underdeveloped as characters that it just made the book feel even slower. By sheer will and grit, she and her best friend Elizabeth Uviebinené had forced the publishing industry to sit up and pay attention: at just 26 years old, they had written Slay in Your Lane: The Black Girl Bible, conceived when they were barely out of university but created as a self-help manual for black girls trying to build their careers, relationships and self-worth. The same social media, a double-edged sword would rock Ola and Michael's world a month before their wedding.I got so annoyed at the wedding scene where the couple expected everything to be okay and fade away and Ola acting as if she had no choice but to marry Michael. Then, I saw her at an event and asked her in passing—I didn’t even finish what I was saying, and she said, “Yomi, I’ll do it. It explores motherhood and identity – I can’t say much yet, I’m only a couple chapters in at the moment, but I’m having a lot of fun. Ola is a journalist for a feminist magazine and is set to marry her longtime boyfriend Michael who has just landed a PR job at a coveted company. The book also tried to tackle so many things at once to the point where it looked as if they were just thrown in without relating to the overall plot. Then, I thought maybe if the story around it was fictionalised, it would create more fruitful conversations. The pace of this book was another issue--it really could have cut a lot of pages, or at least spent less time fleshing things out that didn't need fleshing out. That revolutionized how I saw the book—it started out as something quite serious and I felt like there couldn’t be any levity in it.For example, I’m Nigerian and from the Yoruba tribe, and culturally, men in the Yoruba community tend to pay for things instead of women.
