About this deal

c. 1400, slutte, "a dirty, slovenly, careless, or untidy woman," first attested in the Coventry mystery plays. Frankly I care more about gaining the respect of (both female and) male executives that I work with by communicating in their language (and I don’t mean refusing to use preferred pronouns or other PC linguistics) than in 50 years them realizing oh she knew what she was doing and talking about all along with her hemming and hawing and billion exclamation points. The word "bitch" conjures many images for many people but is most often meant to describe an unpleasant woman.

A brash, enlightening, and wildly entertaining feminist look at gendered language and the way it shapes us, written with humor and playfulness that challenges words and phrases and how we use them. I get so jazzed about the future of feminism knowing that Amanda Montell’s brilliance is rising up and about to explode worldwide. Really cool, empowering tidbits like this teaching me to not feel shame for how I speak, but that my different style (and how many women speak) is to achieve a goal outside what the patriarchy has defined. With the understanding that this should be an educational book, I had serious issues with the authors citations (or lack thereof) and her frequent tendency to put her social media polls on the same level as peer reviewed sociolinguistic studies. Slut (archaic: slattern) is an English-language term for a person, usually a woman or girl, who is sexually promiscuous or considered to have loose sexual morals.I earned 100 points for identifying a singular "they" which I would now like to redeem for a cookie or, like, a hug or something.

A brash, enlightening and wildly entertaining feminist look at gendered language and the way it shapes us. A slut is a person who has taken control of their sexuality and has sex with whomever they choose, regardless of religious or social pressures or conventions to conform to a strait-laced monogamous lifestyle committed to one partner for life. The title of this book alone grabbed my attention, to be honest I didn’t need to know anything else about it before I jumped straight in. Compare slattern, also English dialectal slummock"a dirty, untidy, or slovenly person" (1861), variant of slammacks"slatternly woman," said to be from slam"ill-shaped, shambling fellow. What is not ‘right’ now will one day be the norm that all will follow, though no one seems to accept that.

Going back in time, they have only the written record to consult, and that is not always sure proof of how society was using a given word. I have been unable to find even a list for further reading, which is quite disappointing for a book built upon the work of many sociolinguists who preceded it. Most of the SlutWalks were coordinated by white women, and some black women felt uncomfortable when joining. También ofrece alternativas y maneras de solucionar esta desigualdad, por lo menos desde la parte lingüística.

After scanning the database (British National Corpus), Cameron found that when people use female as a noun, as opposed to woman, it's often in explicitly negative contexts. Connection also has been suggested with Old English (West Saxon) *sliet, *slyt, "sleet, slush," and comparison made to Norwegian dialectal slutr"snow mixed with rain" (see sleet). In actuality, there is so much to learn from in terms of how women speak and especially amongst groups of only women. Out of the 220 terms ascribed to females and 20 terms ascribed to males, [4] all female terms are disapproving while some male terms signal approval or praise; these include stud, player, and man whore. That being said, my head hurts from all the computing I have done and will be doing to be better aware, particularly since my buddy reader will hold me accountable every single day!

i was a bit apprehensive to read this at first as my knowledge of linguistics is v limited, but montell explains everything in such a clear, concise, and witty way, which makes it so accessible and actually fun to read. Este libro de no-ficción ofrece una mirada feminista al uso cotidiano que le damos al inglés y explora los orígenes de tales usos.
