About this deal

Some children may not be great readers, but the use of the onomatopoeia means that those children can still be part of the reading and can enjoy the story even though they can't read it very well themselves. my daughter loves this story, insists we take it to our local mums and tots so she can read it to all her friends.

But little do they know that the tiniest, quietest creature of all has overhead their plot, and she has a plan of her own . Draw a map of the farm on the coordinate grid (see Resources below) and use the coordinates / compass directions to show somebody how to move from one place to another. The little ladybird is heading to the city on holiday just as Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh have hatched a plan to steal the Queen’s crown.Children will love joining in with all the familiar animal sounds, as well as spotting the tiny glittery ladybird on each page.

This prompted me to unearth some plays I’d written for a school reading group, and since then I’ve had 20 plays published. My son absolutely loves this story, especially when I get him to make all the different animal sounds and leave him to fill in the blanks (as he knows the story word for word! The plot is not quite as well thought through as some of her other books, but it does have stunning illustrations, as well as a great message; the unexpected, quiet character is the one who saves the day. What the Ladybird Heard' is a clever and colourful children's picture book by Julia Donaldson which has her hallmark rhyme in considered prose. With bright, bold illustrations and fun rhyming stories, the What the Ladybird Heard books by Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks are perfect for children of all ages.

Enjoy more adventures with the clever little ladybird in What the Ladybird Heard Next, What the Ladybird Heard on Holiday and What the Ladybird Heard at the Seaside. I like the way it captures children's interest whilst also conveying an important lesson of listening and observing - the quietest of all saves the day and you don't always have to be the loudest to be heard!

Read this to my twelve-year-old son yesterday, while visiting friends, who at the time were settling their 18 month child in bed upstairs. This full-colour activity book is packed with puzzles and scenes to recreate, with over 400 stickers inspired by the book’s cast of creatures. Animal-mad little ones will love spotting the story’s seaside inhabitants in this glittery seaside adventure. This book even carries an underlying message that a small voice can be very powerful, and it's all wrapped up in a entertaining package. What the Ladybird Heard is set in a noisy farm yard where the lady bird never says a word, but she does see and listen to the two men in a van planning on stealing the prize cow!

This book could lead onto further activities, such as retelling their own version of the story and creating maps. First published in 2009, 2024 marks fifteen years since the first What the Ladybird Heard book was published, and there are lots of ways your little one can join in the celebrations.A source of intrigue for my pre-schooler who joined in with the whispering parts and was fascinated by each of the characters in this story.
