The Ramblers Association reported in 2008 that a boy of six years, four months and 27 days had become the youngest person to complete the Wainwrights. A six-part series entitled Wainwright Walks: Coast to Coast was broadcast on BBC Four in April and May 2009 and on BBC2 from 21 July 2009, [16] [17] and presented by Julia Bradbury. There are also box-outs on the pages that include historical and other facts about some of the sights to be seen on the route. This was for many years a leading guide to the Pennine Way, rivalling the official guide book by Tom Stephenson. And even though it’s scaled by thousands of keen walkers each year, it doesn’t mean it’s not challenging, especially towards the top.

In my introductory remarks to Book One I described my task in compiling these books as a labour of love. Because of the nature of the layout of the Lakeland fells, some peaks, such as Fairfield and Hart Crag, appear in more than one chapter.

Subsequent volumes in the series to have been revised are The Central Fells (published 2016), The Southern Fells (2017), The Northern Fells (2018); The North Western Fells (2019); and The Western Fells (2020). Another friend, Sandy Hewitson (of Bateman and Hewitson Ltd), agreed to print the books using Wainwright's original manuscript, although the printing was done by the Westmorland Gazette in Kendal, who had taken over Bateman and Hewitson Ltd.
