Nearly all drumstick brands – including the ‘big five’ of Vic Firth, Vater, Zildjian, Regal Tip and Promark – offer a similar range of standard models, which are great starting points. However, if you wanted your drumming to stand out more and be more obvious when playing with a band, you might choose to go with a brighter sound. The shorter length and reduced diameter enables the player to inject greater nuance and dynamic into their drumming, whilst retaining a feeling of balance and control in the hands.

Each affects the stick in different ways, making certain pairs and designs better for various purposes.These are known as “the big three,” while all the other stick brands don’t have player bases that are as wide. As a drummer of small stature with hands that are on the small size, I find these sticks to be of just the right size, both in length and diameter, and weight for general playing.

Drumsticks might be one of the cheaper purchases a drummer will make, but if you play regularly and find you break a lot, the cost of replacements soon mounts up over time. Lots of beginner drummers underestimate how important it is to play drums with the right pair of drumsticks. The 5B size adds additional weight, length and thickness over the 5A’s and these sticks offer an incredibly solid feel and weight. They’re not quite as popular as 5A sticks, but many drummers love the feeling of using slightly thicker sticks. It makes the stick very rigid and extremely durable allowing for an increased attack around the kit.

The good news is that drumsticks aren't that expensive, unless you go for some of the more exotic synthetic sticks (which we also cover here), so you can reasonably and affordably invest in a few pairs to experiment.
