About this deal

It was poor in comparison to the others and I struggled with some of the scenes in it - a bit far-fetched in my opinion. In a collection of stories that seeks to entertain as much as it educate, Nesbø delves as deeply as possible to offer something for everyone. Born in Oslo in 1960, Nesbø was a celebrity in Norway before he ever put pen to paper, first as a striker for the top-flight football club Molde FK, then as the lead singer of the band Di Derre (“Those Guys”). In a sort of aside he asked if I’d seen her since we’d split up and I’d moved out, and with a smile I had to tell him no.

Among the heroes of Nesbø there are both cynics and simpletons, but they always act unpredictably - even for themselves, because human logic is powerless in front of the green-eyed monster. There was something in his eyes, a pain I recognised from my own reflection in the mirror back then.

I have also read a few of his stand-alones and really liked them, so when I heard he had a collection of short stories coming out, I knew I had to read them. Anyway, he turned out to be a really nice person – polite without being servile, intelligent but in a discreet way, and with a humorous appreciation of the comical aspect of our situation. Summoned to the Greek island of Kalymnos to investigate the possible murder of a man by the man's twin brother, Athens detective Nikos Balli—who specializes in sniffing out jealousy as a motive—ends up detecting an old friend's ill intentions during a mountain-climbing outing.

I take another chocolate, a Daim, have already unwrapped it, but then change my mind and take a Nougat Bali instead. King uses the phrase keeping it on the down-low in a way that suggests he probably doesn’t understand how this phrase is currently used—and has been used for quite a while. Grim humor (“rather than kill someone they hate, Greeks allow the victim to go on living in Greece,” thus, the low murder rate in Greece) leavens stories highlighting the dark side of human nature. And yet, officer – and I know this may sound strange – it’s actually a sort of comfort to know that it was her feelings for someone else that ruined everything for us. There were a few stories that were very good and I would have liked them to have made decent novels but generally this book dragged. The book starts well and the first short story was addictive but many of the other stories were predictable, repetitive and too short to get absorbed. Far away, in another country, a taxi driver finds his wife's earring in a car belonging to his boss and sets out to discover how it ended up there.

The Jealousy Man - Penguin Books UK

A passenger flying from New York to London decides to part with life after discovering that her husband is having an affair with her best friend. It was partly because some of them are very wordy, but mostly it was because I was just not very interested in the topics. He is the author of several biographies, a Viking history and, most recently, The Cabin in the Mountains: A Norwegian Odyssey. Zaplet je donekle predvidiv, ali način na koji priča završava ipak iskače iz uobičajenih narativnih okvira.

Some of the stories were reminiscent of Roald Dahl's unexpected tales, as they were dark with clever twists. Other themes include lust, infidelity, obsession and betrayal and there is a disturbing atmosphere throughout. Nesbø also makes the most out of the conceit of the title story—a detective specializes in homicide cases where jealousy is the motive. My absolute favorites were London, The Jealousy Man and The Line, which incidentally were all in Part One. We are—well, ask Bigfoot, as Brooks does in this delightful yarn, following on his bestseller World War Z (2006).

I used to joke that she’d be the death of me, that one of her fanatical admirers would decide to do away with me. With stories that vary in length, it is even more important to pay attention, as there are times when a piece is over before it really begins, meaning the reader will miss what is being presented. In Jealousy, a man is always driven to do something Very Bad by an overabundance of jealousy, warranted or not, and the stories under Power involve some pretty twisted power games and several are dystopic or have a sci-fi element. With Nesbø’s characteristic gift for outstanding atmosphere and gut-wrenching revelations, The Jealousy Man confirms that he is at the peak of his abilities. That these easter eggs are meaningless and even befuddling to new readers might make sense in terms of costs and benefits. Meet a detective on the trail of a man suspected of murdering his twin; a hired assassin facing his greatest adversary; and two passengers meeting by chance on a place, spelling romance or something far more sinister. After all, she was a wealthy young woman, good for fourteen million, whereas I am a debt-ridden photographer with a little too much faith in his own business skills. S. Geological Survey, leading to “immediate suspension of the National Volcano Early Warning System,” and there’s always someone around looking to monetize the natural disaster and the sasquatch-y onslaught that follows.
