About this deal

The special effects aren't particularly good, but I did quite like some of the sets, the room with all of the Witch's equipment looked rather good.

Arin Murphy-Hiscock is the author of The Green Witch’s Grimoire, Spellcrafting, The Pregnant Goddess, Wicca, The Green Witch, The Way of the Hedge Witch, House Witch, The Witch’s Book of Self-Care, Pagan Pregnancy, Solitary Wicca for Life, and The Hidden Meaning of Birds—A Spiritual Field Guide. I can’t decide if this was churned out by an adult, presumably for a bet, or by an overly ambitious 12 year old. Filled with fascinating characters, courtly intrigue, political machinations, delicious cuisines, cuddly companions, magical hijinks, and will-they-won’t-they romance, The House Witch is the first in a captivating new series. The cats are still racist (someone clearly had a word about this because in book 3, they’ve had their accents changed), and some new people of colour are awkwardly introduced.

Then theres the scene where Fin is pretending to be gay so Chloe doesn't have to work as a prostitute and giving “marital advise” to patrons of the brothel. But by this point I am invested and want to know what happens to Finlay, but it just doesn't make sense to me why steer so far from the core of what made the first book so good. The "humourous" bits were the slapstick kind which may entertain a 10-year-old, felt also totally out-of-place and were repeated to the point of ridiculousness. There’s this weird assumption that being married will resolve things, rather than everyone saying ‘so what, we don’t care because that’s irrelevant’. The quality of the writing is important because it drags down every other aspiration that the novel is reaching for. I also kept getting off-putting “nice guy” vibes from the main character; he had several preachy white knight moments that felt way too modern and cringey.

I hate to say that, and it’s very much personal preference, but about half way through it took a tragic turn I personally didn’t care for, which caused the remainder of the tale to be dulled for me. I didn’t believe we would be able to make ends meet if it were just Finlay and myself, even though in truth I was better off relying on my own talents than trying to support his movements . As his past begins to catch up with him, Fin must negotiate court politics and stay out of trouble, together with his familiar, Kraken his fluffy black kitten. It could be that recently I have been reading heavier novels and was not in the right mindset for the lightness of this series.WAIT ALSO THE BROTHEL SCENE LMAOOOOO Like I understand this is supposed to be a comedic, funsy, romantic novel but what was that? Now it’s up to Fin, with the help of his family, friends, and wily kitten familiar, Kraken, to attempt a daring mission of rescue and espionage. He belligerently argues with the powers that be and uses his 'secret magic he absolutely needs to hide' without any caution.
