Cutter relishes in this type of gory detail, so if you’re not strong of stomach or you don’t like this sort of horror, you probably won’t be a huge fan of The Deep.

The first thing they see through a porthole in the egg station is a crazy guy with a scalpel making threatening gestures before he turns away and runs off to God knows where.childhood nightmares of a cruel and disgusting mother, aka Battle-Ax Beth, and worse, the millipede memory, (for me the most disturbing part of the story) that brings with it a painful, guilt ridden and heartbreaking loss.

In a multimillion dollar Hail Mary play for the future of the species, the US government builds an underwater habitat, the Trieste, at the bottom of the Mariana Trench’s deepest rift (8 miles underwater) and send three different scientists to find, harvest, and experiment on this Ambrosia. The Troop has received positive reviews from outlets such as the Quill and Quire and National Post, the latter of which included a satirical review from Davidson praising the book. I've never really thought about how scary it would be to travel miles underwater and then just hang out at the bottom of the sea. Miles beneath the surface, compounded by thousands of pounds of pressure threatening to instantly turn one into human pate, The Deep begins its saga. During the story, each chapter is intercut with various reports and interviews surrounding the events that transpired on the island. You start not remembering little stuff, then the bigger stuff, then you just forget how your body functions and you croak. A full-time book nerd who works in publishing for her day job, Thea currently resides in Astoria, Queens with her partner and rambunctious cat. I don’t think I have ever read a book before this one that made me root for the characters to be put out of their misery. Some of the things I did enjoy were the basic premise, the overall claustrophobic feel, and the Trieste itself.

What I’d read up until that point was freaky as hell, and had set up some really interesting (and potentially supernatural? The pandemic that is supposed to serve as a catalyst for mankind (ok, not really, American-kind, because the rest of the world is relying on the USA according to an offhanded conversation early on) to turn its eyes to the sea is really kind of throwaway. Finally there is Al, a woman who pilots the submersible that takes down to the Mariana Trench where The Deep is set. of how the thing in the closet was completely real and you were so small and no one was on your side. Why introduce a pandemic at all when it actually has no impact on the story and is questionable as a catalyst for exploration and scientific endeavor?
