Description

In some broader types of Cockney, the neutralisation of /ʊ~uː~ʊə/ before non-prevocalic /l/ may also involve /ɔː/, so that fall becomes homophonous with full and fool [fɔo]. Shoreditch-born Barbara Windsor, who plays wandering wife Maggie Gooding in a tight skirt, high heels and frilly white lace blouse with a cloud of blonde hair, embodies both ‘sparrer’ and ‘sparrow’. However, Clive Upton has noted that these features have occurred independently in some other dialects, such as TH-fronting in Yorkshire and L-vocalisation in parts of Scotland.

Carry on up the East end | Movies | The Guardian

An influential July 2010 report by Paul Kerswill, professor of sociolinguistics at Lancaster University, Multicultural London English: the emergence, acquisition, and diffusion of a new variety, predicted that the Cockney accent would disappear from London's streets within 30 years. These places still have their hedges and homeowners haven't got the right to put in drives, and so they have their front gardens. They are easy because they are on my doorstep and in the height of summer I can get something like 40 of them coming down.

The lights go up in cinema four and the warm applause suggests the audience would like to thank Windsor for a very pleasant evening. So Reggie got to hear of it and they took them aside - there was quite a fight - because they didn't like all that swearing.

This originated in London in the 16th–17th centuries and is also part of Received Pronunciation (RP). The informal definition of the East End gradually expanded to include towns in south-west Essex such as Forest Gate, East Ham, Leyton, Plaistow, Stratford, Walthamstow and West Ham as these formed part of London's growing conurbation. In the 1950s, the only accent to be heard on the BBC (except in entertainment programs such as The Sooty Show) was the RP of Standard English, whereas nowadays many different accents, including Cockney or accents heavily influenced by it, can be heard on the BBC. In multicultural areas of London, the Cockney dialect is, to an extent, being replaced by Multicultural London English—a new form of speech with significant Cockney influence. Set within an historical framework, this well written plot flows seamlessly as Clemency dreaming of pursuing a singing career gets swept up in Jared Stone’s vendetta against a French aristocrat while struggling to keep her family safe from the cruelty of her mother’s former pimp. Unknown to him, she is now sharing a flat with his son, her new common-law husband, bus-driver Bert (George Sewell), and a baby of uncertain paternity. Eastfield depot added a white stripe to brighten up the BR blue livery carried by its’ locos in the early eighties, and also, once to a visiting class 44 “Peak” that turned up for an open day!
