About this deal

Parvana s best friend, Shauzia, has escaped the misery of her life in Kabul, only to end up in a refugee camp in Pakistan. Parvana and Shauzia, the brave protagonists of The Breadwinner, must now flee to escape new dangers from an old enemy. In this particular case, many of the restrictions for the characters - particularly the female ones - are caused by the Taliban. They are horrified when the 'game' turns out to be Taliban soldiers chopping off the hands of male prisoners. The only clue to her identity is a tattered shoulder bag containing papers that refer to people named Shauzia, Nooria, Leila, Asif, Hassan — and Parvana.

Thoughts: I honestly can't walk two feet without being stopped and having this book recommended to me. Since she knows how to read, she earns money the same way her father did and becomes the family breadwinner.

The girl does not respond to questions in any language and remains silent, even when she is threatened, harassed, and mistreated over several days. When she and Father are preparing to leave Kabul, Parvana uproots some wildflowers and replants them in the marketplace where she and her father would set up their stand. One day while working, a tea boy spills cups on Parvana's blanket, and she is shocked to see that it is not a boy at all but Shauzia, her former classmate. A neighbor woman comes up with an idea: Parvana can dress as a boy, because boys can come and go freely.

When Parvana asks about Shauzia’s family, Shauzia says she knows leaving her family makes her a bad person, but she’ll die if she stays.Parvana lives with Father, Mother, her 17-year-old sister Nooria, her five-year-old sister Maryam, and toddler brother, Ali. The girl witnesses a public punishment where men convicted as thieves each have one hand chopped off. Later, Nooria tells Parvana that this is a great opportunity—her new in-laws will send her to university, and the Taliban doesn’t control Mazar-e-Sharif, where her future husband lives.

The Breadwinner" is about 11-year-old Parvana and the risks she takes to help provide for her family after the Taliban takes control of Afghanistan.

Because the woman has no burqa, Parvana waits until nightfall to leave the building and bring her home, where Mrs. One day, when a tea boy spills cups on Parvana’s blanket, Parvana is shocked: the tea boy is her former classmate, Shauzia.

She wasn’t particularly concerned when the Taliban closed schools and insisted girls couldn’t learn. She believes that people have a responsibility to care for their families, even if it means sacrifices must be made. The events in The Breadwinner center around the idea of what one can do when there seems to be no other option. Ellis (Looking for X) bases her contemporary novel on refugee stories about the oppressive rule of Afghanistan by the Taliban.
