About this deal

However, for strictly personal reasons, I had difficulty investing emotionally in the main character of Mackenzie. Unfortunately this often happens only later in life when/once 'we have ripened on the window sill of life'.

It is this man who brings everyone back from the brink, and makes us realize that life does/must go on, like it or not. Well written, endearing, and subtle, one can't help but wish for more for MacKenzie's life, but the end at least gives her the peace she deserves. At first, I found the jumping back and forth structure a little jarring as a reader, but as the plot picked up steam and startling drama started to unfold at Mackenzie's funeral, I found myself eagerly turning the pages to get to the final twisty denouement. Motherhood' - is there a more valuable/purposeful 'job' than preparing balanced people for life … who become our pillars of society? Intriguing premise - Mackenzie Bartholomew discovers she's dead but has no idea how, so her spirit is forced back and forth in time to piece together the mystery.

Julie is a frustrating character, because she is angry and stubborn and never listens to anyone to the point where you start to think that Julie is really is so distraught that she will never be able to heal or maybe she is just self centered. We are whisked back and forth between the funeral, and the past, some distant and then moving forward to more recent events until we come to the day she died.

She develops such a depression to the point where she shuts everyone away from her and her husband, Ian, does exactly the same. Hosmer and her characters along with their situations bring to life and awareness the things we think, the choices we make, and the reasons we make them, and examines them from all angles, even the uncomfortable ones. They are in a state, hanging on by a thread, between existing and living fully, between being parents and not having a living child. And while this story is definitely full of tragedy, it's also filled with love and hope, and I fully believe this story can change the right someone's life.Along with a team of draft horses, four cow ponies, and the range cattle, which are included in the purchase of the remote six-hundred-acre ranch, they reluctantly inherit the reclusive tenant who lives in an old trappers cabin on the property. Ian and Julie, a married couple have just lost their daughter, their only child in an auto accident. Then the landscape takes over and the first chapter becomes a beautiful description of the expanse of land. This extraordinary book helps dispel fear around death and dying—revealing it to be a natural part of our soul’s evolution.

The ending is bittersweet, as there really can’t be a happy ending when the main character is dead right from the start, and we learn so much throughout the book that makes that fact sadder and sadder. Pseudo-punk Magnolia and underachieving gamer-geek Rom are two unlikely friends who only hang out during their walks home together after school.

They can't seem to hang on to each other and draw strength from their marriage and their experience of being Darla's parents. In Somewhere in Between, thirty-nine-year-old Mackenzie's spirit can't leave the Earth until she finds out why she died. I appreciate the grief this mother would have gone through but felt the author went on ad nauseum about it. As much as the book was a disappointment, the ending is moving and Virgil's destiny brought me to tears. Both Julie and Ian struggle with their deteriorating marriage and the individual guilt and sorrow to try to run away from the reality they have come to contend in the wilderness at their home and with their tenant, Virgil Blue.
