About this deal

Because of this tragic death, James is forced to go live with his Aunt Charmian and Uncle Max in the Scottish countryside. Charlie is a big fan of horror films and is now hoping to give a great many children sleepless nights with his The Enemy series. He’s determined not to be daunted by the rules and regulations and the centuries old traditions of the place. Hellebore explains to James that he and his brother set out to create better and stronger soldiers by manipulating the endocrine system. YoungBond 3 was untitled at this stage - the publishers were running an online competition for the public to decide the book title, with the winning name (Double or Die) embargoed until January 2007.

James’s classical tutor, also in charge of athletics at Eton, Merriot becomes something of a mentor to James. They ride into the forest surrounding the estate, where George finds them and despite James' misgivings, proceeds to help them destroy his father's laboratory.

Charlie Higson got the less than envious task of writing down the adventures of a young James Bond between the two Big wars. Exercises at the back of each Reader help language learners to practise grammar, vocabulary, and key exam skills.

Silverfin by Charlie Higson - review - The Guardian Young Bond: Silverfin by Charlie Higson - review - The Guardian

Because Fleming never explicitly said when James Bond was born, Ian Fleming Publications and Charlie Higson chose the year 1920 as his birth year. However, while training for the swimming portion of the race in the icy Thames, George Hellebore comes to torment him. Readers are left with the uncanny realization that James has begun the work that his uncle warned against—he has tasted the work of an undercover agent, and more is sure to come. On his first day at Eton, James comes across Lord Hellebore's (the headmaster's) son, George, who is very abusive and cruel to James. He didn't think anything of it, and he prepared for the swimming, which James, being the youngest competitor, performed neither poorly, nor excellently in. But young James is not without a backbone of his own, and he soon begins to win small victories against those who choose to bully him.

They reveal that they had experimented on Alfie Kelly, but his heart had given out on the first dose. Apparently George Hellbore, Lord Hellbore's son, hasn't played a match of cricket since his first, when the ball hit him in his face. After a supremely scary opening sequence featuring some terrifying mutated eels and a gruesome death, Bond’s early days at Eton in the 30’s as a thirteen-year-old are the focus for the first third of the book. Uncorrected proof copies of SilverFin, Blood Fever, and YoungBond 3 (Double or Die), together with an uncorrected typescript of Hurricane Gold, issued in place of the proof copy format, and a signed first edition of Double or Die. He is popular and adept at school but his only stumbling block is the bully George Hellebore, son of the boorish Lord Hellebore.

Bond places seventh in shooting, fourth in his heat in swimming (which was not good enough to qualify for the final race), and first in cross country running. He is currently starring in Tittybangbang series 3 on BBC Three and has appeared as a panellist on QI. I would recommend this novel to anyone between the age of twelve and sixteen as I think anyone under the age of twelve would not appreciate seeing some blood-thirsty eels gnaw viciously at a fat man, watch a kid nearly get pushed off a train, see blood spill as there are a ton of knuckle-bleeding' fights, and experience viewing a man who was transformed into an ugly deformed beast, throw some hits at a villainous, monster.

Higson and Walker do a commendable job of revealing how Bond’s youth may have helped to create the legend that is 007. Now, all that said, Kev Walker's art is, as usual, outstanding, and does the heavy lifting in terms of making this book readable. The young Bond is an orphan who doesn't follow the crowd and is more than comfortable spending time alone, but equally he knows a good friend when he sees one and sticks by the ones he makes; he's an exceptional athlete in some areas and speaks multiple languages, but has never thought of these as talents to be proud of. It is also in this part of the novel that Higson reveals the details of Bond's parents' death, first mentioned in Ian Fleming's You Only Live Twice.
