The ‘effective’ zoom range in full-frame terms is 88-320mm which is very useful, even if it doesn’t give as much telephoto reach as, say, Canon’s EF-S 55-250mm lens for APS-C format SLRs. These types of set ups can often cause some difficulty with autofocus systems but I’m happy to report that I was quite happy with the overall performance.

The large focus ring has a rubberized finish and feels very nice to use, plus it's wide at just under a couple inches (around 50 millimeters).

As well as being pin-sharp, the lens delivers smooth and creamy bokeh (the quality of defocused areas) which can be every bit as important in portraiture. So, the 16mm DN is getting some in camera help, but the good news is that the end product is pretty excellent. Meanwhile, the smaller sensor used by Micro Four Thirds cameras gives the lens a narrower field of view, equivalent to a 32mm lens on a full-frame camera. Later on, however, Sony moved to a hybrid system that employs both Phase Detect and Contrast AF along with new features like Eye AF. It’s the biggest lens of the trio, and as such is perhaps a little unbalanced with the small size of this camera which doesn’t have a viewfinder to make it a bit more chunky.

However, we have developed our own proprietary MTF measuring system (A1)* using 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensors. These are almost never going to be large enough with this kind focal length to be noticeable, however, so I wouldn’t be too concerned. DN ART lens from Sigma, and, while the AF worked fine in a lot of situations, I discovered with use that I had some issues with the AF pulsing in and out some during video recording, particularly if there was any backlighting in the scene. With a clever retractable design, it’s both smaller and lighter than the original lens, and has the bonus of a significantly greater maximum viewing angle.

Since color moiré is not generated, the use of a low-pass filter is not required, meaning light and color, generated by the 46-megapixel APS-C X3 direct image sensor is captured with a three-dimensional feel. In real world shooting I was very happy with the results, with a lot of good detail showing up at a pixel level. I’ll comment more on the bokeh quality in a moment, but Sigma does a good job of maintaining a circular shape even with the aperture closed down a number of stops. It’s built well, the overall size of the lens is decent, the autofocus is great, and the image quality is superb. With your ear to the lens, you can hear the high pitch noise of the AF motors whirring as they move, but in normal use, you won’t.

I’m actually a huge fan of the 18mm because it’s so great to carry around all day, since it is a pancake lens.The Contemporary designation apparently comes because the lens relies on electronic correction (through the embedded profile) to correct for some things like distortion and vignette rather than the correction coming solely through the lens optics (which ART lenses are supposed to do). Amongst the more exotic elements are three FLD (Fluorite Low Dispersion) glass elements and two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements, which are designed to reduce chromatic aberrations. I was sent the Sony E-mount version and tested it with the Sony A6500, a very capable APS-C mirrorless camera.
