About this deal

This was touched on above but make sure the grinder will actually grind your coffee to the appropriate size. Sage is the UK and European version of Breville that you will otherwise find around the rest of the world. Watch out for a few rogue coffee grinds ending up on your work surface here if the container doesn’t fit snug. If you stick with us for a few minutes we can explain to you a few key things to look out for when purchasing a coffee grinder and things to avoid.

As you get finer with the grin So my opinion with hoppers is to use them as temporary storage only and keep your beans in air-tight storage, preferably in a cool and relatively dark location (such as a cupboard, or on the moon, whichever is easiest). In other words, it was the environment that the coffee machine was in, in which the changes were happening, not the hopper, but the hopper wasn't providing any protection against this change in humidity. So what I'd say about grind size, is to start out somewhere in the middle of the suggested grind range that the smart grinder pro displays on the screen, and tweak from there. The burrs are now slightly closer together so you take the entire grind range finer, but be careful if you do this, if the shim is too big you'll just push the burrs together, which you don't want.It didn't take me too long, however, to realize that this is just because the paddles on the side of the portafilter have to be parallel with the sides of the cradle, and because of where these are on the Gaggia Classic, you just have to put the portafilter in with the handle over to one side. It’s a bit tricky to clean – you’ll need to dismantle it first – but a big plus of the ceramic element is that it’s never going to rust. Where Smeg is retro and bold, Sage prefers a more slimline and discreet appearance, with a matte black satin-feel finish and dots of stainless steel throughout. I bought this grinder for pairing with my Gaggia Classic, which was a used 2003 model, but also for Aeropress, cafetiere, and V60, and this is the main reason I was looking at the Sage grinders in the first place, as they appeared to be perfect for varied use.

The Niche Zero grinder has only been around for a couple of years, it was designed by the inventor Martin Nicholson who had noticed that grinders had been the same design for 50 years whereas most other technologies had evolved so much in that time they were almost unrecognizable in comparison to the original. With 60 settings and a hi-tech digital display, its intuitive settings essentially hold your hand through the grinding process, allowing you to find just the right coarseness and grind time to make that perfect cup of coffee.Grinding your coffee right before you brew triggers all of these chemical reactions that actually add to the brewing if the coffee is fresh. It’s also surprisingly quiet for such a big machine, and the anti-static technology means coffee grounds won’t stick to surfaces.
