About this deal

Robin remains emotionless then as the blade falls he moves suddenly to overcome the guard and, in the commotion, make an escape. What this transfer improves on accurately is fine detail, the elimination of crush in the blacks and some wonderful DOLBY Vision HDR that brings forest and fire tones alive like never before.

But with this version of Robin Hood, the ham is turned up and theatrical-style production is at an all-time high with the performers turning in great performances even if it comes across as over-the-top and cheesy. Back in 1991, Kevin Costner ruled the cinematic landscape and with his filmmaking partner Kevin Reynolds in hand for this and Waterworld, the two seemed unstoppable.Great performances abound including Morgan Freeman as the Moorish warrior Azeem, Alan Rickman as the hysterical Sheriff of Nottingham, and Kevin Costner as our stalwart Robin of Locksley. There are varying degrees of film grain still intact, but it never swarms or seems busy, but rather has a consistent base that keeps the filmic quality preserved. Kevin Reynolds' 1991 Box Office hit is a rip-roaring old school action adventure with prime Costner, prime Rickman and prime Freeman tearing up the screen, and Arrow's lavish set doing them justice in 4K. Arrow's quality checks have slipped from time to time and it'll be interesting to know if this is a genuine issue or not that big a deal as you mentioned in your review.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Limited

That iconic sequence of the flaming arrow looks the best it has yet in slow motion with some amazing detail as it flies past the camera. Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves comes with a great 2160p UHD 4K transfer with Dolby Vision HDR from Arrow Video. Theatrical Cut (UHD; 2:23:12) and Extended Cut (UHD; 2:35:02) are accessible under the Choose Version Menu. Nothing is overly loud and there are no booming noises like there would be in a modern action film, but it gets the job done. Where the film was arguably always less convincing, and where that is absolutely exacerbated by the passage of time, is in the casting of Robin Hood himself.

In the extended DVD version, the scene with the witch admitting to being Nottingham's mother is edited back in, along with a subplot in which she spies on him around the castle (thus explaining her knowledge of events Nottingham has learned of but which she has not yet been told, something Nottingham took to mean she could see the future) and additional footage which makes it clear that Nottingham's true allegiances lies with the Devil, which explains the line "Look to the beasts which share our god. It’s not a subtle film, there are shifts in tone from violent set pieces to laugh-out-loud comedy but if you sit back and go with the flow, you will get a very enjoyable action adventure and you can see why it did so well at the box office.

Alan Rickman, only a few years past Die Hard here, drops the German accent and hams up his Hans Gruber to outrageous levels.

The other "modern" aspect is probably not quite as felicitous, with Kevin Costner coming off as a kind of "surfer dude" Robin at times. Helmed by director Kevin Reynolds (Waterworld, The Count of Monte Cristo), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves pays homage to the past while. The brilliant modern remake that Errol Flynn brought to audiences decades prior now had a big budget, great set pieces, and top actors in every role. What resulted in the end was a film that Costner still draws ridicule from, especially considering it’s the meat between the quality of Dances with Wolves and JFK.

disc in addition to the 4K UHD disc, but Arrow's SteelBook release does contain both 1080 and 4K UHD discs. Having been sentient in 1991, if I ever hear that song again it will be a day too soon, but it’s there, as is the film’s trailer. It doesn't hurt the film at all, and is just something critics were instantly attracted to, as it is their job to find faults. Robin Hood decides to fight back as an outlaw when faced with the tyranny of the Sheriff of Nottingham. And that memorable flaming arrow shot - reportedly captured at three hundred frames per second rather than 24 - looks stunning.
