About this deal

They use 7075 lightweight aluminium poles, with durable poly flysheets that won't falter in arduous conditions, and will give you years of service. The awning is handy for storing things, and the mesh is Scottish Midge repellent, which is a much needed feature for us! Mid February we headed off to the Cairngorm National Park and chose to pitch up at the side of Loch Morlich.

However, we had lots of wet ground at our pitch so it was greatly appreciated and a very handy feature. I was used to the setup which is exactly the same as the Phoxx 1, so it was a clear choice without offending the wallet. Sturdy design, minimal faff when pitching [enjoyed a good thunderstorm in one recently with no adverse affects! The Jackal III is definitely a fast pitch, consisting of only 2 colour coded poles, setting up at the shoreline of Loch Morlich was painless and straight forward. Cracking tent for DofE type hikes - can split the tent with purpose made carriers so it stays dry on outside of rucksack and the youngsters can have an equal share of the load. There was no snagging on the mesh sleeves as I fed the aluminium pre-angled Enduro poles into their colour coded positions. The hydrostatic head of 5000mm exceeds most other tents and puts it firmly in the same league as serious mountain tents. Impressed with the good quality of the dry bags and the packing system which means the weight of the tent can be easily and manageably shared between two walkers. It’s not as beautifully crafted as my Stratospire 2, but for a budget tent I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. Our position wasn’t too exposed but I could tell that this tent would stand ok if it was, despite not being of a semi geodesic structure.

It weighs in at just over 3kg and packed down is about the size of a rolled up pusser’s issue roll mat. Build quality is excellent and it has so far weathered apocalyptic rain in the Trossachs, a fairly *interesting* thunderstorm down in Snowdonia and some North Wales coastal winds which were not kind. For a while now I’ve been thinking about getting something a bit more suited to the Cumbrian climate. and when it’s packed, don’t expect to be able to fit this snugly inside your pack along with the rest of your gear unless you’re sporting a 60+ litre pack. Our go to tent over the summer has been a big single skinned teepee that I got from Tesco a few years back for the grand sum of 25 quid.

The outer fly sheet of all the OEX 2020 tent range is a rather lovely shade of green, that kind of green that helps you blend into the background. The OEX Phoxx 2 is incredibly cheap for what you’re getting and for those starting out with long-distance backpacking, its durability and stability make it more forgiving in windy conditions, meaning you can pitch it in some fairly exposed areas should you find yourself struggling to find a more suitable campsite. I’d been using the OEX Phoxx 1 for a couple of years and was very pleased with the stability in high winds and driving rain on my wild camps. The porch area is a good size too allowing kit storage and even careful cooking/brewing if the weather is a little inclement. Quick and easy to pitch, the OEX Jackal II features an integrated footprint for the large vestibule, to keep your pack and boots safe and dry overnight. The porch area is also large enough to keep a backpack or two in there also, however we had left ours in the car on this occasion as it was parked nearby.

At the time of writing, we are in the middle of the COVID-19 ‘lockdown’ and looking forward to when we can get out in this very capable backpacking tent again. To say we were struggling to not get blown backwards by the wind as we walked to the water is a little bit of an understatement. Also in the morning I found it difficult to open without the rain and dew dripping into the porch and on to me. Would recommend to anyone looking for a decent two man to facilitate some wilder hiking and camping.
