About this deal

If a species overpopulates when resolving its own feeding, it may not feed again this turn even if it has a trait such as Tentacled that would normally allow it to feed again. The species with Ambush takes 2 population after another species forages, even if that means the species with Ambush would overpopulate or take from one of your own species. The Giant Brain is also the home of the Brainwaves podcast, a fortnightly podcast covering industry news that Iain hosts with his friend Jamie Adams.

Game designers Nick Bentley and Dominic Crapuchettes want to give an immersive experience without a rules explanation that takes 30+ minutes. If the Cambrian Explosion has started, place 2 population from each of your species into your score pile.

Oceans is a spin-off of the Evolution series from North Star Games and designers Nick Bentley, Dominic Crapuchettes, Ben Goldman, and Brian O’Neill. If it exceeds the nine fish limit, it has overpopulated the ocean and half the fish tokens are removed from its board. They offer more than 100 different ways to beef up your evolving species, and cause serious havoc for fellow ocean dwellers! Each turn you take a fish off in the process of ageing, this goes straight behind your personal screen and is your score at the end of the game. Or you can boost defensive powers and help protect your adjacent species from attacks when your opponent tries to make waves in your eco-system.

Crossing Oceans picks up the theme and some elements of the 2017 board game Transatlantic, composing an entirely new game on a large historical map. These creatures then fight over a central resource of smaller fishies or attempt to snack on each other. Diving into this stack of cards is like putting your hand into God’s lucky dip tombola – whatever you draw will be intriguing, exciting or useful. If people start attacking you and whittling you down, you can simply build a species that makes it beneficial for yourself to be attacked, or turn it around and harm the attacker with clever use of cards. However you wouldn’t need to have my particular sensibilities to realise that the cards in Oceans are not up to the job. A species can still attack a species with Neurotoxin, even if all the population it takes would be lost to the Reef.
