About this deal

Weighing 850g, the AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR is significantly lighter and more compact than Nikon's other pro-level telephoto zoom lenses. Having used the lens for a month, I came to the conclusion that the new VR III system is indeed more effective than VR II. Thanks to all these optical features, the Nikon 70-200mm f/4G VR performs extremely well compared to the f/2.

Nikon Z Lens Roadmap (Updated October 2023) - Photography Life Nikon Z Lens Roadmap (Updated October 2023) - Photography Life

Detailed specifications for the lens, along with MTF charts and other useful data can be found on the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR page of our lens database. Again, I won’t be able to provide any numbers here and it is hard to say how much better it is – probably between half a stop to a full stop (depending on the situation) is a good guess. It would also do great as a travel lens, leaving more room in your bag for other essentials and not causing as much pain on your back.Nikon has previously said that this roadmap will cover “to 2023,” so presumably, the remaining 35mm lens will be announced later this year. What this all means, is that the Nikon 70-200mm f/4G yields shallower depth of field than the Nikon 70-200mm f/2. All of them fill useful spots in the lineup, for anything from astrophotography to portraiture and street photography. When testing out the Nikon 70-200mm f/4G VR, I found that it renders colors the same way the Nikon 70-200mm f/2. Summary Good points: Excellent image quality in the DX image-circle even wide open; very good performance well into the FX corners at longer focal lengths; excellent image stabilization; weather sealing; quiet, fast, and precise AF operation; maximum magnification of 1:3.

Either way, I really liked how the Nikon 70-200mm f/4G VR handled vibrations and I felt like it worked better than on my f/2. To test the effectiveness of the image stabilization I did a series of over 40 test-shots hand-held at 200mm with VR=ON at 1/25 sec and with VR=OFF at 1/200 sec. While they use slightly different textures in the rubber, it’s near impossible to distinguish between the rings except by position. However, there are also plenty of differences between the two models, especially in terms of camera and imaging features. For photographers who need advanced photo editing options, Pixelmator Pro for macOS offers layer-based editing, machine learning-powered adjustment and selection tools, and features such as Denoise and Super Resolution. This newest Pocket model features a camera with a larger Type 1 sensor and a 2-inch rotatable touchscreen for vertical or horizontal framing. More complete comparisons including the Unremarkables and Bokeh shots at different apertures will be presented in the up-and-coming 70-200mm shootout. The new Nikon 70-200mm f/4G VR also comes with a brand new, third generation Vibration Reduction (VR) technology, which Nikon claims can provide up to 5 stops of image stabilization.

Canon was just nice and smart enough not to discontinue the old non IS version and keep selling it for a bargain to people who couldn't afford the new, better IS version. It has solid build quality, high-tech features and delivers excellent image quality and all-round performance.i have the 70-200 f4 just purchased do you think it would ok to use on a tripod with out collar ,i have a d7000 at the moment . I ask that you *please* "spoon feed" me the better (smoother) looking/textured background regardless of how isolated the subject looks.

See the full frame which were so ruinously expensive just five years ago and how they became more reasonable with the D600 and the 6D. In all honesty, I cannot see any differences worth noting between these lenses – all four produce pretty smooth and pleasing to look at bokeh. So the combination of smooth and short distance means I can almost reliably move focal length with just a touch of my thumb, a bit unusual for Nikkor designs, but very welcome. In fact, plastic handles extreme temperatures better than metal, because it does not expand and contract like metal does when temperatures change quickly. To give you a better insight as to how this lens compares to its bigger brother I’ve supplied data for the AF-S 70-200/2.Marike6: you're right, photography (at this level of gear) is quite expensive, but I think it could (should ? VR II + TC-20E III, you can get pretty decent results even in less than ideal lighting conditions, because it is still an f/5. And the same is true for the Nikon 70-200mm f/4G VR – the TC-14E II works extremely well, making it a 98-280mm f/5. Lens design hasn't stood still and I am sure an optics manufacturer of the caliber of Nikon will be able to at least match if not exceed the IQ of the Canon 70-200mm f4 IS lens. In those situations, the lens with a faster aperture still has the advantage in terms of depth of field.
