About this deal

The book was made into a 1974 movie directed by Sidney Lumet and produced by John Brabourne and Richard B. This is a serious subject but its prominent place in what is presented as a traditional locked room whodunit felt slightly off-key. Poirot propounds two possible solutions, one far simpler than the other, and advising them to consider both seriously. To my mind this was a distraction and looking for them would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack – so I didn't bother. But that doesn’t stop Benedict from raining down red herrings, plot complications, and false solutions, spiced up by a series of meta-games involving anagrams, Kate Bush songs, three rounds of a Christmas quiz, and the obligatory recipe.

As in the 2017 film, MacQueen's father was the prosecutor rather than the Armstrongs' lawyer, whose career was ruined after he was threatened into acquitting Cassetti. But the hints of other crimes Tempe’s identification uncovers, particularly crimes against children, spur her on to redouble her efforts despite the new M. Advertisements in the back pages of the UK first editions of The Listerdale Mystery, Why Didn't They Ask Evans, and Parker Pyne Investigates claimed that Murder on the Orient Express had proven to be Christie's best-selling book to date and the best-selling book published in the Collins Crime Club series.

An innocent, but perhaps loose-lipped, maid employed by Lindbergh's parents was suspected of involvement in the crime. It will be up to you, and any of your passengers you trust, to solve the mystery of the diamond and what could soon be a literal pile of bodies aboard your journey.

Heavner isn’t exactly mollified when Tempe, aided by retired police detective Skinny Slidell and a host of experts, puts a name to the dead man. Along the way you’ll be joined by Dr Errol Earhart, who discovered the diamond, as well as the mysterious Marie amongst others. Princess Dragomiroff, in reality Sonia's godmother, claims the monogrammed handkerchief, saying that her forename is Natalia, and the "H" is actually a Cyrillic letter "N".The cast includes Dame Eileen Atkins as Princess Dragomiroff, Hugh Bonneville as Masterman, Jessica Chastain as Mary Debenham, Barbara Hershey as Mrs Hubbard, Toby Jones as Ratchett, and David Morrissey as Colonel Arbuthnot. This book certainly fits the bill with its deliberate reference to Agatha Christie's title, and Christmas thrown in.

This version was abridged from the book version (losing some 25% of the text), was without chapter divisions, and named the Russian princess as Dragiloff instead of Dragomiroff. The solution raised the ire of Raymond Chandler, but won't bother anyone who doesn't insist his detective fiction mirror real-life crime. Roz is constantly and anxiously on the phone to her daughter's female partner, and all this stirs up memories of her fractious relationship with her own mother, especially during her mother's dying days. The most significant, by page count at least, is rape and if this is a trigger for any one then this is NOT the book for you.To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
