About this deal

Herbert narrates this book in a sly clever humorous let's tell you a story kind of way that really works here and makes the reading experience so much fun.

In the first chapter of the book the invisible narrator gives the reader a low-down on Creed and has, I thought, a very pleasing voice, telling the tale in an amusing and very entertaining way. Investigating the mysterious events that led to an otherwise unassuming family falling foul of the effect of LSD. And, especially this, be careful when you take pictures; things can look quite different when you stare at it through the lens of a camera. Appearing out of nowhere, it fortunately saves our heroes from certain death only to spare our the love interest (something the novel tells us it's quite keen on killing).I've read all of Herbert's pulpy novels as a kid, and im enjoying re-reading them now, sort of as a palate cleanser between more serious or heavy novels. The stakes are pretty high, but perhaps not as high as they are Mostly, the female behavior was so off-putting, the main character inaccessible, and the whole thing a strain. At first Creed thinks that the old lad is crying, but then he hears laughter and realizes he is wrong.

sex scenes, the second half of the book seems to go nowhere and our (anti)hero makes the most ludicrous decisions and takes the oddest actions. In brief the major events of the novel take place in the island of Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands in the English Channel near the French coast.Creed snaps off a few shots and notices that the earth seems to be moving for the guy—quite literally—the ground is rippling! This could be described as crime fiction with supernatural elements, and although the supernatural aspect was very predictable it was still enjoyable.

The book was a good read from start to finish and I definitely recommend it to fans of strange, vintage horror! Its been many, many years since I read a James Herbert book and I'm not sure whether my tastes have changed a lot more than I thought they had or whether this just isn't a good example of a Herbert book. Although a good officer, he doesn't work well in a team and colleagues see him as a Jonah as officers with him on jobs often suffer mishaps yet Kelso always comes through unscathed. He is good at his job and has a knack of snapping the unsnappable, a skill which is helped by the fact that he is almost totally without morals. What I do know is that it was more appreciated by teenage me with my raging hormones than it is by adult me with my cynicism and world weariness.

Sepulchre by James Herbert | Goodreads Sepulchre by James Herbert | Goodreads

Some of the creature descriptions veer too far into silliness, undermining any threat or fear they might hold. travellers bring back reports of a strange light seen shining above the endless dunes of the Taklimakan Desert. However, still a very worthwhile read with good lead character even if the supernatural element was under used. Don’t get me wrong, it did have enough good points to prevent me from giving it an even lower rating.Various biographical and critical pieces by and about Herbert have been collected in James Herbert: By Horror Haunted, edited by Stephen Jones, and also in James Herbert – Devil in the Dark, written by Craig Cabell. The killer however is aware of this fact and uses this opportunity to mess with Childes while getting their sick pleasure out of it. I just got done reading Mary Renault’s Theseus Duology, and while her Grecian hero is “highly-sexed” (according to the back blurb), even he doesn’t spend a quarter of the time Herbert does on breasts.
