About this deal
Most studies looking into the complications of umbilical hernias have a significant selection bias because they only take into account patients that have undergone a surgical correction, leaving out a large proportion of patients with umbilical hernias who have never had any complication. If that doesn’t happen, or if the hernia becomes incarcerated (unable to be pushed back manually) or strangulated (cutting off the blood supply to the intestines) surgery will be performed to repair it. If there is bruising under the skin after an umbilical hernia repair, a pressure dressing may be used to reduce this. During a well-child care visit, the history given by parents might include a swelling of the belly button, which increases when the baby is crying, coughing, or straining.

One of the first milestones new parents look forward to is the healing oftheir infant’s belly button. However, if the hernia is particularly large or if the hernia is still present when the child reaches age 3 or 4 they may require an operation to repair it. A hernia is when a part of the intestine pushes through a weak spot in the belly (abdominal) muscles.
This is important because the hernia may become less obvious when a child is under a general anaesthetic.
